UNIONVILLE — It became apparent early on that the only issue left to decide for the Community Viqueens in their Region 4-AA quarterfinal game Friday night would be the final score.
The Viqueens pitched a shutout in the first half en route to a 71-4 victory over the Stratford Lady Spartans as region play began.
Community (23-7) used a swarming full-court press to control play from the outset in the opening quarter.
M.J. Simmons scored 10 points while Shelby Cawthon added five as the Viqueens scored early and often while minimizing any shot attempts by the Lady Spartans.
The Viqueens led 26-0 heading to the second quarter.
The Viqueens backed off from the press, but the points kept coming in the quarter.
Izzy Martinez led the way with six points as Community kept the momentum going. Stratford was not able to connect for a score as the Viqueens took a 48-0 lead into the intermission.
Community rested its starters in the second half and used its substitutes at will. Six Viqueens scored as Community increased its advantage to 60-0 before the Lady Spartans connected for their first point on a free throw with 1:52 left.
The Viqueens ended the third quarter with a 67-3 lead.
Play went quickly in the final quarter with a running clock as the Viqueens closed out the win.
Simmons and Cawthon each scored 13 points to lead 11 Viqueens in the scoring column.
The Viqueens were 18-of-30 from the free throw line.
"We didn't want to create some bad habits," Viqueen coach Cody Pierce said.
"We wanted to stay fundamental and put the game away early and let some others get some playing time."
"But when you win the district tournament, then you set yourself up pretty good," Pierce added. "That's what I told them. You've earned this, so understand if you win the district, you have this opportunity."
Seven substitutes scored in the game for the Viqueens.
"They got a lot of playing time and played good defense and scored some on offense," Pierce said.
Community advances to the Region 4-AA semifinals and will travel to Whites Creek High School to take on Pearl Cohn Monday night at 6 p.m.
Pearl Cohn defeated Cascade 55-45 in another quarterfinal game.
