CHAPEL HILL - After taking the lead for good late in the third quarter, the Community Viqueens used a big fourth quarter to supplement a strong defensive effort as the Viqueens defeated the Forrest Lady Rockets 51-38 in a District 12-AA basketball game Friday night.

The Lady Rockets took a 12-8 advantage as the lead changed hands five times in the opening quarter.

With Haley Mitchell scoring five points, the Viqueens ended the quarter with a 6-0 run and took a 14-12 lead to the second quarter.

Community (7-6, 2-0) used its defense to offset a low-scoring quarter.

After the Lady Rockets scored the first three points to take a 15-14 lead, the Viqueen defense held Forrest scoreless the remaining 7:42 of the quarter.

The Viqueens could only manage five points, but it was enough to take a 19-15 lead into halftime.

M.J. Simmons scored five points and Breanna Beech added four as the teams swapped leads four times in the third quarter.

A basket by Simmons with 3:06 remaining gave Community the lead for good at 25-24.

The Viqueens ended the quarter with a 31-26 advantage.

Simmons netted seven points and Breanna Whitaker added five free throws as the Viqueens pulled away with a 20-point fourth quarter.

After grabbing a 40-30 lead, the Viqueens spread their offense to take time off the clock.

Forrest got within 41-33 with 2:36 left, but Community scored four straight points to put the game out of reach.

The Viqueens added five foul shots in the final 14 seconds to finish with the 13-point win.

"Every night in our district is going to be a battle to start, but it's who can finish up strong, can adjust, and have good fourth quarters," Coach Cody Pierce of the Viqueens said.

"Recently, we've had good fourth quarters and you've got to be a team that plays well late."

Simmons scored 20 points to lead the Viqueens.

Laura Mealer had 19 points for the Lady Rockets.

The Viqueens finished 16-of-27 at the free throw line while Forrest was 10-of-16.

"I felt much better with our defense than Tuesday," Pierce said. "We worked hard the last two days in practice getting up and defending."

Community travels to Nolensville for a 6 p.m. game Tuesday night.

The Viqueens are the only team in District 12-AA without a loss after the first two games of the district schedule.
