LYLES - The Community Viqueens went over 12 minutes without a field goal and the East Hickman Lady Eagles went on an 11-0 run Friday night in the Region 6-AA quarterfinals, which looked for the Viqueens to be a recipe for a long night without positive results.

With their season in the balance, the Viqueens found a way to win.

Community (13-11) erased a 6-point deficit with an 8-0 run in the final 1:37 to defeat the Lady Eagles 45-43 and advance to the region semifinals.

Both teams came out hot as the lead changed hands eight times in the opening quarter.

All five Viqueen starters scored as Community took a 15-12 lead with 2:01 left.

It would be the last Viqueen field goal for awhile as the Lady Eagles scored the final six points to take an 18-15 lead to the second quarter.

As Community continued to have trouble finding the basket, the Lady Eagles completed an 11-0 run by scoring the first five points of the quarter and took a 23-15 lead.

The Viqueens could only manage four free throws, but stayed close by scoring the final three points as East Hickman led 25-19 at halftime.

The Lady Eagles extended their lead to 27-19 in the third quarter before Brianna Beech nailed a trey with 5:29 left to give the Viqueens their first goal in 12 minutes, 32 seconds.

Haley Mitchell scored five points as Community clawed away and cut the East Hickman lead to 33-29 heading to the final quarter.

With M.J. Simmons scoring eight points, the Viqueens cut the Lady Eagle lead to 36-35 before East Hickman increased its lead to 43-37 with 1:37 left, leaving the Viqueens with little time to turn things around.

Zoey Dixon started the comeback with a 3-point play to cut the Lady Eagle lead to 43-40. After an East Hickman miss at the free throw line, Breanna Whitaker connected on a field goal to get the Viqueens within one at 43-42.

A free throw by Dixon tied the game at 43-43 with 55 seconds left.

The Viqueen defense came up big and forced a jump ball on the next Lady Eagle possession, giving the ball to Community with 39 seconds left.

After a timeout, the Viqueens passed the ball around the perimeter, looking for the high percentage shot.

Whitaker found an opening and passed to Simmons near the basket.

Simmons got behind the Lady Eagle defense and scored with 11 seconds left to give Community a 45-43 lead.

The Lady Eagles raced down court and put up a shot in the lane that rolled off the rim.

The buzzer sounded, leaving the Viqueens with the come-from-behind win.

Simmons had 15 points to the lead the Viqueens.

Abbie Lampley led East Hickman with 10 points.

The Viqueens were 13-of-19 at the free throw line while the Lady Eagles were 8-of-15.

With fourth-seeded Stewart County beating top-seeded Nolensville in another quarterfinal game, Community will host Stewart County Monday night in the semifinals of the Region 6-AA tournament.

Game time is 7 p.m.

The Viqueens were the only District 12-AA team to win their quarterfinal game and remain alive in the tournament.

***Coach Cody Pierce of the Viqueens on East Hickman and his team staying close: They're a very physical team and a very fast team and I've got to give them a lot of credit. We hung in there and kept it close enough where we could make some plays in the end."

***Pierce on the team's outlook down the stretch

We were desperate the last couple of minutes. We full-court pressured them and the ball bounced our way. The girls made plays and they won the game. They made it very difficult but they did it.

***Pierce on the strategy of the game-winning possession

With a tie ballgame, we wanted to run as much time off. We don't want to let them know we're killing it for the last shot. I told them let's run some offense. If something's there, take it. We got the ball down in the corner and posted wide open no-help side.

***Pierce on his team not throwing in the towel

No doubt. They've done it most of the time this year. I wish we'd do it for four quarters and just put teams away. It says a lot about them. They don't quit.

***Pierce on his team playing at home in the semifinals

We're home Monday. It's awesome.
