Webb outlasts Grace Christian in district battle

BELL BUCKLE — It took all four quarters for the Webb Feet to pull out the win against district foe Grace Christain on Tuesday night, but a strong defensive performance late in the contest catapulted them to a 52-44 victory.
The Lions jumped out quick on the Feet in the first frame as they knocked down four shots from beyond the arc on their way to a 16-13 lead after one quarter.
Webb didn’t down lightly though, adding five 3-pointers of their own in the second frame.
Arnett Hayes accounted for two of those threes, and he finished with 13 points on the night.
Feet head coach Micah Williams was sidelined with sickness, so assistant coach James Garcia stepped into his place.
Garcia emphasized how hard Webb fought throughout the game.
“We didn’t play our best tonight,” Garcia said.
“They are very well-coached and they kept our leading scorer in check. We fought and that was the important part.”
At the half, Webb held onto a slim three-point lead, but the Lions roared back in the third.
Heading into the final frame, Webb faced a one-point deficit
It was their defense that ultimately pushed them over the hump to close out the game as they held the Lions to only three points which came from the free throw line.
“We were mixing our defense up a little too much, but once we went back to man they started missing shots,” Garcia said.
“We probably should have started out that way.”
Outside of Hayes, Stephen Olowoniyi was the only other Webb player in double-figures with 14.
Many of which were emphatic slam dunks.
“It’s a game changer,” Garcia said about Olowoniyi.
“He can run the floor really well. He didn’t play his best game tonight, but when he figures it all out, he will be hard to stop.”
