Wilson’s trey gives Viqueens close win

UNIONVILLE – It was anybody’s guess how the script would be written after the Community Viqueens played their first basketball game after a 2-week quarantine.

It did not look promising after the Viqueens fell behind 62-54 with 2:30 remaining, but Community changed the narrative and the outcome as Aleah Wilson canned a three-pointer at the buzzer to give the Viqueens a 66-65 victory over the Huntland Lady Hornets Tuesday night.

“We finally got a win. We needed one,” Coach Cody Pierce of the Viqueens said.

In a game with several twists, Community (1-3) got off to a strong start in the opening quarter.

Haley Mitchell scored nine first-quarter points as the Viqueens used an 8-0 run to take a 12-7 lead. Community ended the quarter with a 17-11 advantage.

The Viqueens kept the momentum going in the second quarter. Wilson and Addison Brothers each scored four points off the bench as Community used a 9-0 run to take its biggest lead at 26-13 with 5:16 remaining. The Lady Hornets fought back and cut the Viqueen lead to 31-25 at halftime.

With Anna Stevenson scoring 21 second-half points for the Lady Hornets, it appeared the Viqueen advantage would be short-lived.

Stevenson scored 13 points in the third quarter as Huntland used an 8-0 run to erase the Viqueen lead. The Lady Hornets took a 45-38 lead to the final quarter.

“We started great. Then we gave them a few possessions in a row for about two minutes and gave up too many easy layups and had a hard time guarding Stevenson,” Pierce said.

The Viqueens were not ready to throw in the towel. M. J. Simmons had 11 fourth-quarter points as Community bounced back to take at 54-50 lead with 4:30 left.

The Lady Hornets responded with 12 consecutive points and retook the lead at 62-54. Simmons and Breanna Whitaker accounted for the next seven Community points as the Viqueens closed the gap to 64-61 with 1:13 left. A Zoey Dixon basket moved the Viqueens within one at 64-63 with 35 seconds remaining. Despite only nine players suiting up for the game and Whitaker and Simmons fouling out down the stretch, the Viqueens persevered and had one final possession with nine seconds left and Huntland holding a 65-63 lead.

Community passed the ball around the perimeter for most of the remaining time as the Huntland defense put pressure on the Viqueen guards. Wilson found a small opening and fired a trey at the buzzer that swished the net to give the Viqueens the dramatic win.

Simmons scored 20 points to lead three Viqueens in double figures. Mitchell netted 14 points while Wilson added 13.

Stevenson put up a game-high 32 points for the Lady Hornets.

The Viqueens were 15-of-22 at the free throw line while Huntland was 9-of-19.

“I think the team after being quarantined really missed it,” Pierce said. “The past three or four days they’ve shown a lot of passion in practice.”

Pierce was asked if the strategy was to go for the three in the final seconds.

“Yes. I felt at that point we needed to go for the win,” Pierce said.

“It went in.”

Community entertains Cascade in an intra-county matchup Friday night. Game time is 6 p.m.
