The Shelbyville Central Golden Eagles won their 20th game of the season on Monday, 6-2, against Lawrence County on Senior Night.
Seniors Nick Hopper, Parker Burks, Nick Johnson, Carston Williams, and Kyler Trice were all honored pregame. This senior class helped bring Shelbyville to their first state-sectional appearance since the turn of the century last season as juniors, pushing Stewarts Creek to a game three.
Head Coach Chase Jones has led this turnaround for the Golden Eagles, and his team this year at the close of the regular season has posted back-to-back winning seasons for the first time since the turn of the century as well.
Parker Burks got the start on the mound for the hosts, throwing five complete innings while only allowing three hits, and of the two runs he gave up only one was earned. He struck out three batters while only walking one on 69 pitches, picking up the win.
Stephen Bobo closed out the final two innings, only giving up two hits while striking out five on 33 pitches, picking up the save.
Nick Johnson went 1-3 at the plate with a double. Nick Hopper also went 1-3 with a double and two strikeouts, but he also drove in a pair of runs and came around to score once. Carston Williams went 1-3 with a run scored and one RBI while striking out twice. Burks went 0-3 at the plate with a strikeout.
Shelbyville fell behind 1-0 in the second before taking the lead with a three-run inning, and then they tacked up three more runs in the bottom of the fifth to take a commanding 6-1 lead. Lawrence County scored a second run at the start of the sixth inning, but then Stephen Bobo came on to shut down the rally and secure the 6-2 win.
The Golden Eagles improve to 20-11 (5-5) with the double-elimination District 9-AAAA Tournament beginning Wednesday against Warren County. The winner of that game moves on to take on the number one overall seed and tournament hosts, the Lincoln County Falcons, on Thursday night in the winner’s bracket while the loser plays the first game on Friday in the loser’s bracket.
