Local law enforcement had its hands full last weekend with several people being charged with drug possession, no driver’s license and drunk driving. But there was even more serious-a shooting behind a carnival on Madison Street and worse for Shelbyville, another homicide.
On Saturday, June 1, Shelbyville City Police Department responded to the parking lot of 1250 Madison Street, Gateway Church, regarding a male being stabbed. When officers arrived, they found the victim, Robert Travis, with multiple stab wounds.
It has been said that guilt and remorse can haunt a person who has taken another’s life. The imagery of carrying the victim’s last breath emphasizes the burden of responsibility and the lasting impact of such actions.

The victim, Travis, was able to identify his attacker as “Nicole Burk” before being transported to Vanderbilt Bedford Hospital. Travis succumbed to his injuries a short time after arriving at the hospital.
SPD reports that during the investigation, it was made known that Burk and Travis had an estranged relationship.
An arrest warrant for criminal homicide was issued for Burk. She was found and arrested early Sunday morning, June 2, in Andalusia, Ala., by the Andalusia City Police Department.
Andalusia is about 350 miles south of Shelbyville.
Shooting near carnival
Earlier in the weekend, on Friday, May 31, around 10:23 pm, Shelbyville City Police Department responded to the parking lot of Madison Street Self Storage, which is behind where the carnival was located, in reference to gunshots heard in the area.
Several people went to social media over the weekend, noting they had heard several gun shots.
Upon arrival to the scene, local law enforcement located a male who had suffered a gunshot to the arm. The victim was transported to Vanderbilt Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Updated this week: The Shelbyville City Police Department has made two arrest in connection with the Madison Street shooting that took place last Friday night. Cam Fite of Shelbyville was arrested earlier this week for aggravated assault and booked into the Bedford County Jail. A male juvenile was also arrested for aggravated assault and unlawful possession of a weapon.
