Bicyclist struck, killed on highway

A former Shelbyville resident was killed in a traffic accident Sunday night in Moore County.
Boyce Smelcer, 63, was on a bicycle in the eastbound traffic lane of Highway 41A, the Tennessee Highway Patrol told the Lynchburg Times.
Smelcer was stationary and facing oncoming traffic, the THP said. The bicycle was struck by an SUV driven by Rita Colbert, 64, of Tullahoma, who was uninjured.
Drug charge
Marijuana was found in the possession of a driver who allegedly had driven past a stopped school bus with lights flashing on Madison Street.
Police responding to a complaint of a reckless driver Monday afternoon found the described vehicle and suspect Jullian Dior Haile, 32, of Sun Circle, at a Ligon Drive residence.
Officers Tracy Teal and Brandi Merlo smelled marijuana and asked if any was in the vehicle; Haile allegedly replied there was none.
Teal saw a bag containing “a green leafy substance that appeared to be marijuana” on the front seat and arrested Haile for simple possession. Officers confiscated more than $1,100 from Haile’s wallet.
Haile was released on $10,000 bond.
Thefts
An electric saw, two diamond earring studs and speaker wiring were taken during the day Wednesday from a home in the 1700 block of Fairfield Pike, according to a Shelbyville Police Department report.
Other thefts reported to area authorities:
•A cell phone was stolen from a self checkout area at Walmart around 10 p.m. Monday, police were told.
•A wallet containing $350 and credit cards, along with a pair of shoes, were allegedly stolen by a passenger in an SUV on Tuesday. A debit card from the wallet was later used at a Shelbyville store.
•Nothing was immediately noticed missing after an entrance door to a storage building in the 500 block of Railroad Avenue was destroyed Tuesday.

Damage, including a broken window, was estimated at $1,500, the owner said. The building was ransacked after entry.
