Champs' team effort downs Merrol Hyde

HENDERSONVILLE - For the last few weeks, the Cascade Champions have struggled to consistently shoot the ball.

Even with that inconsistency, they've found ways to win games and extend the season.

During the Region 4-A quarterfinals on Saturday night at Merrol Hyde (13-8), Cascade finally was able to shake off some of the rust and not only effectively shot from the perimeter, but was efficient at the free throw line in a 77-65 win over Merrol Hyde.

The team chemistry was evident from the opening tip-off to the final buzzer as the Champions (14-10) put forth perhaps their most complete total team victory to date.

Four players reached double figures, with senior Alex Allison's 18 points leading the way.

"Alex Allison-what can you say? Eighteen points, 4-of-4 from the free throw line and I'd bet he was close to 10 rebounds again. He's just solid for us," Champion coach Chris Lawson said.

With a lack of a perimeter attack in recent weeks, it was senior Landon Lane who answered the team's call with 16 points off the bench and three made three-pointers.

"Landon Lane-16 points with three three's. That was huge. It was a complete team win from top to bottom," Lawson added.

Cascade raced out to a 6-0 start, but soon after, shots started falling for the Hawks.

Isaac Stinson was a scoring machine for the home squad.

He posted a game-high 35 points, including three three-pointers and a 10-of-11 effort at the charity stripe.

Knowing Stinson's ability to score in multiple ways, Lawson tasked senior Seth Countess to mark Stinson and even having given the extra defensive attention to the Hawks' scorer, he was able to find additional ways to get open and knock down shots.

"You have to give them credit. Isaac Stinson had 35 points-and I thought Seth (Countess) did a fairly good job on him. He just didn't miss. We took things away and he found ways to get to the rim," Lawson said.

"We got up 10 or 15 and they wouldn't go away. But I have to give our guys a lot of credit too. They played a heck of a game."

Even with Stinson scoring on seemingly every Hawk possession, Cascade was able to maintain its balance on the offensive end of the court.

With 7:35 left in the game, Stockton Pyne connected on a shot to cut the Champion lead to single digits.

The Champions responded with an 11-0 run that nearly put the game out of reach for good.

The game's pace slowed considerably following that run as both teams combined to shoot 31 free throws in the quarter.

As a team, the Champions connected on 20-of-27 tries in the contest-a significant increase in percentage from recent games.

"In a really important game, we shot the ball really well. We didn't hesitate. We stepped up, knocked shots down and played with a lot of confidence," Lawson said.

Merrol Hyde was efficient shooting as well as the Hawks connected on 17-of-23 attempts.

In addition to Allison and Lane reaching double figures, sophomore Jackson Davis and Countess added 13 apiece.

The win advances the Champions to another Region 4-A elimination round, except this time, the opponent is all too familiar for Cascade.

The Champs will travel to Fayetteville to face the Tigers, who most recently defeated Cascade in the District 8-A semifinals-a game which Lawson says has fueled his team's drive for their postseason success.

"We're still upset about it. Our guys were hurt when Fayetteville came to our place and beat us," he said.

Interestingly enough, all four District 8-A teams won their region quarterfinal matchup. Eagleville and Moore County will meet in the other Region 4-A semifinal.

Of the three meetings so far this season, Cascade owns two of the wins by a combined four points, while Fayetteville pulled away late in the district semifinal meeting for the eight-point win.

"Give them credit because they beat us, but we're excited to go back to Faytteville on Tuesday night," Lawson said.

Cascade will tip-off on Tuesday night at Fayetteville at 7 p.m. for the right to play in the Region 4-A championship.
