William Christie has served as a Shelbyville City Councilman the last 8 years. His main concern, he said, is to address the concerns of the people he serves. While that might seem simple, Christie believes the people of Shelbyville, especially in Ward 4, should always be his top priority.  

“When taxpayers contact me, I convey their concerns to the City manager or department head in an effort to address these concerns and follow up until a resolution has been achieved.”  

He said he believes that taxes are a big issue with local citizens.  

“I voted no to the recent property tax increase. Shelbyville’s property tax rate should not be higher than Murfreesboro’s tax rate. We should not have one of the highest property tax rates in the state. If I am re-elected, I will make it a priority to reduce the property tax rate to an affordable rate. Young families and senior citizens are struggling.”  

Christie said he has spent his entire life in Shelbyville. He is married to Lori and they have 3 children: Bill Christie, Lacey (Chris) Cartwright, and Haley (Brian) Wilson. He is a graduate of Shelbyville Central High School. After attending Middle Tennessee State University in Murfreesboro, he coached junior high basketball and high school basketball in Bedford County. Later in life, he coached girls’ youth softball, basketball and was president of youth football.  

“I know the citizens of Shelbyville. I can relate to their needs. I have walked in their shoes.”

Christie said as a steward of the citizens’ money, he recognizes the importance of “conservative budgeting and spending.” 

The City Council needs to require a balanced budget from the administration but still provide services that the citizens deserve, he explained.  

“If re-elected, I will continue to work for the people of Ward 4. I stand by my record and I will always do what is best for the citizens I serve.”
