BELL BUCKLE — It was a dominant performance from the opening tip-off to the final buzzer for the Webb Lady Feet in the Division II-A State Quarterfinals on Friday night as they jumped out to an early lead and added to it throughout the contest for a 83-23 victory over the Fayette Academy Lady Vikings.
The Lady Feet (30-4) didn’t give the Lady Vikings (21-10) a chance to breathe in the first quarter as they found their footing offensively and went on a 19-0 run until the minute and a half mark of the frame when Emmie Moore knocked down a pair of free throws for Fayette for their first points.
“We played with a great deal of energy and weren’t scared of the moment,” Lady Feet head coach Matt Shewmake said.
“We’ve played in games like this all season, so these lights weren’t too bright. There may have been a bit of shell shock on the other side with the early run we went on, so that worked to our advantage.”
Moore added two more for the Lady Vikings on the next offensive possession, but Webb answered back with two Bree Robinson Layups to close out the quarter with a 23-4 advantage.
All five of the Lady Feet starters contributed their first quarter total with Robinson and Aalyah Del Rosario combining for 12.
It was much of the same in the second frame as Webb opened on a 12-0 run before Moore knocked down a layup for the Lady Vikings with a minute and nine seconds left to stop the run.
The two squads traded baskets over the last minute of the quarter, and the Lady Feet went to the locker room with a 41-8 lead.
Daria Biriyk dropped in nine points of her own in the quarter to lead the way, and she tied with Moore for a game-high of 16 on the night.
Coming out of the locker room for the second half, the Lady Feet didn’t miss a beat as they went on three separate runs of 7-0, 11-0, and 9-0 respectively in the third quarter to extend their advantage to 68-14 heading into the final eight minutes of the contest.
Rhema Collins led the way with seven of her own in the frame.
11 different Lady Feet contributed to their total throughout the night with three posting double-digits.
“Practices are super competitive with how much depth we have. They go out there and play against each other every day, and some days one will best the other and vice versa,” Shewmake said.
“Our secret sauce has kind of been that anyone can be the leading scorer on any night. That’s a great position to be in as a coach.”
With the win Webb advances to the Division II-A State Semifinals held at Tennessee Tech University.
