A sudden increase in electricity usage at a house on U.S. 41A North in El Bethel alerted its absentee owner to an alleged squatter’s presence, according to a Bedford County Sheriff’s Office report.

A representative of the owner flagged down Sgt. Jared Featherstone as he drove past the house Wednesday. Featherstone and deputies Nate Speegle and Tony Schafer were met at the door by Darrell Wayne Chapman, 55, who allegedly said he’d been staying there with a friend for three days and two nights.

Deputies found no evidence of anyone else living there. They did find a drill, crowbar and hammer allegedly used by Chapman to force a back door, 3 grams of methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia including needles, scales, a spoon and a glass pipe containing meth residue.

The house’s lock had been drilled out and a door on a nearby house trailer appeared to have been pried open, the report said.

Chapman, whose address is listed on arrest records as Jennifer Circle, was charged with burglary, aggravated burglary, possession of burglary tools, possession of schedule II drugs and possession of drug paraphernalia. He was held at Bedford County Jail on $50,000 bond.

The home is owned by Erik Hansen of Meridian, Idaho, according to Tennessee property records. It was occupied by Torry and Nancy Hansen during April 2010 when Torry sent her adopted then-7-year-old son back to his homeland of Russia, saying she didn’t want him anymore due to what she said were violent tendencies and psychological problems. The incident sparked an international controversy over foreign adoptions.
