FRANKLIN — Several county high school wrestlers participated in the Division I state wrestling tournament over the weekend.
Five county high school wrestlers, representing Cascade and Shelbyville Central High School qualified for the tournament, with two reaching the final day of competition.
Shelbyville Central’s Logan McBee placed the highest among the five who qualified for the state tournament.
McBee battled his way in the consolation bracket to the third-place match and out-lasted Maryville’s Peyton Cooper in the 220-pound weight division in a 5-2 decision to capture third in the Class 2A state tournament.
McBee went 4-1 in the tournament, with a hot start on Thursday in Day 1 of the tournament.
He beat Rossview’s Thomas Shipstead in a 17-3 major decision and followed by pinning Aiden Elmore of Franklin in 4:47.
His lone blemish in the tournament came in an 8-3 loss to Wilson Central’s Noah Todd.
McBee rebounded with another major decision, coming in a 12-4 win over Hayden Nichols from Bradley Central to earn a spot in the third-place match.
Cascade’s Isaac Chapa also participated on the final day of the tournament in the fifth-place match.
In an all-out war that spilled into several extra periods, Chapa came up just short of placing fifth in the 195-pound Class A bracket, falling in a 3-2 ultimate tie-breaker to Livingston Academy’s John Geist.
In his second match against Aiden Howard of Pigeon Forge, Chapa came up short in a 7-4 decision and landed in the consolation bracket.
He followed by pinning Nathan Heathman of Sycamore in 2:18 before falling to Nathan Downey of Green Hill, which put Chapa in the match for fifth-place.
In addition to McBee qualifying for the state tournament, Shelbyville Central’s Landon McCroskey participated in the Class 2A 152-pound division.
Cascade also saw Hayden Dowell and Vayden Moore reach the Class A state tournament as well in the 195 and 126-pound weight classes as well.
After Dowell dropped his opening match, he rebounded with a 12-10 decision over East Hamilton’s Caleb Richardson before seeing his run in the tournament end in the third round of the consolation bracket.
