Memphis murder suspect captured in Shelbyville

A suspect in a Memphis murder was apprehended in a Shelbyville home Tuesday afternoon.
Donald Ray Harris Jr., 32, of Ripley, leaped from a bedroom window at a Barksdale Lane apartment as officers from the Shelbyville Police Department, Bedford County Sheriff’s Office and U.S. Marshal Service gave chase. Harris was taken into custody after a short foot pursuit.
Harris is charged with first degree murder and aggravated robbery, according to Memphis police.
Shelbyville police said they haven’t determined why Harris was in Shelbyville.
Investigators found a loaded gun and drugs in the home from which Harris ran.
A loaded 12-gauge shotgun, approximately 4 grams of crack cocaine, and crystal “ice” methamphetamine were confiscated from a bedroom occupied by Craig Green, 43, of Shelbyville, police said.
Green is charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, possesssion of a firearm during the commission of a dangerous felony, possession of a schedule II drug with intention to resell, and possession of a schedule II drug and paraphernalia. He is being held without bond at Bedford County Jail.
Thefts
•Two recently-delivered packages were stolen Monday from the back porch of a Laws Hill Road home, the Bedford County Sheriff’s Office was told.
Security video shows a woman in a red Ford Fusion pulling into the driveway, looking around, taking the packages and leaving. A suspect was named.
Also reported to local authorities:
•A Railroad Avenue resident reported $280 was taken from his wallet at his home last Saturday. A suspect was named, Shelbyville police said.
•A newly-issued Tennessee license plate was stolen from a Davis Street home Sunday afternoon, police said. The owner had left the plate unattended for approximately 10 minutes while attaching it to her vehicle.
•More than $91 worth of gasoline was stolen from Sunchaser Market, Highway 82 South in Flat Creek, Monday afternoon.
A young, white man and older woman in a silver van stopped at the store, an employee told a Bedford County deputy. The clerk said the man got back into the van and drove away as she attempted to stop them.
Checkpoint
A sobriety checkpoint will be conducted beginning at 9 p.m. Friday, June 24 on Highway 82 South at the 6.5 mile marker (in the Flat Creek area), the Tennessee Highway Patrol has announced. Checkpoints must be announced in advance per federal law.
