Director of Bedford County Schools Tammy Garrett announced Tuesday the appointment of principals for the 2022-2023 school year for Cascade High, Cascade Middle, Eakin and Learning Way Elementary. Assistant principal assignments will be announced soon, according to the Central Office.

Sandy Sorrells has been named principal at Cascade High. Sorrells served as assistant principal at Lincoln County High School for 12 years.

Sorrells worked as supervisor of federal programs and school nutrition for Fayetteville City Schools for 7 years and was a 4th and 6th grade teacher for 7 years; she has also served as a “grade chairman,” supervising teacher and their mentors.

Sorrells earned her specialist of education and master’s of education in administration and supervision from Tennessee State University in Nashville and her bachelor’s in elementary education from Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU) in Murfreesboro.

The new principal and husband, Jacob, have 4 children–one a graduate of the United States Air Force Academy—two currently in college, and one a rising senior.

When asked about her transition to BCS and a new high school, Sorrells said, “Cascade has a long-standing tradition of excellence, and I am proud to be part of the Champion family. I will strive to create an atmosphere where adults consider the whole child to see them reach their full potential. I bring a positive attitude that isn’t afraid of change or a challenge and welcome feedback and expertise of others in the field. I have been so impressed with Bedford County schools, and I look forward to growing with them. Mostly, I look forward to meeting and working with the CHS teachers, students, families and the community in a collaborative partnership.”

Susan Huff, a native of Bedford County, has been promoted from assistant principal to principal of Cascade Middle School. (Current principal David Parker assumes the role of supervisor of student services for BCS.)

Huff taught in Bedford County Schools for 18 years before becoming assistant principal at Community Elementary for six. She is a 1991 graduate of Shelbyville Central High School and went on to earn a degree in early childhood education and a master’s in administration and supervision from Middle Tennessee State University.

She and her husband, Cas, have 4 children—the youngest who recently graduated from high school. Huff said, “The family environment at CMS makes it a great place to work. I enjoy watching everyone pitch in when there is a task to be completed. I look forward to continuing to build relationships with students, faculty, staff and community of Cascade.”

Kathy Reed is the new principal of Eakin Elementary. (The school system reports that current principal Dulcie Davis will be taking on other responsibilities to assist and support BCS.)

Reed has served as principal at Learning Way for the past 5 years and was assistant principal for 3 years at Community Middle School. She spent 27 years in the classroom before entering administration where she taught first, second and fourth grades. Reed earned her master’s in administration and supervision from Trevecca Nazarene University in Nashville and her education specialist degree in instructional leadership. She earned a bachelor’s in elementary education from MTSU.

Reed has been married to Johnny Reed for 38 years, and they have 2 grown children—one who is engaged to be married in November.

“Teaching is an act of love,” commented Reed. “Love for the subject, love for helping students grow, love for making a difference in others’ lives. But mostly, it’s a love for children. You must begin with loving children before you can educate them. I most love being in the classroom seeing the amazing things happening with students. Eakin Elementary has an awesome staff of dedicated, hard-working teachers that are making a difference in the lives of children daily. My goal is to work with this staff and students to help everyone achieve their highest possible potential academically,physically and socially.”

As a result of Reed moving to Eakin, Christi Lux has been promoted to Learning Way principal. Lux has served as Learning Way assistant principal for 6 years and is entering her 20th year in education. She taught physical education in Rutherford County and in Manchester City, she taught math, lifetime wellness and physical education. She also coached softball and cheerleading.

Lux and her husband, Nathan, have been married for 19 years; they have one teenage son.
Lux stated that Learning Way is built on a culture of trust, understanding, hard work, follow through and teamwork. “I’m proud to be a Learning Way Elementary Little Eagle . . . honored to have the opportunity to watch this school continue the successful path we’ve been working on the last 6 years. “

Superintendent Garrett said, “We are thrilled to have these talented individuals leading their respective schools. Their unique skills and knowledge will no doubt serve our students and teachers well as we continue to build an environment of success in the Bedford County School District.”

Bedford County School System is currently a district of 16 schools with a current population of 8,800 students.
