UNIONVILLE — Corey Paterick scattered five hits in a complete game performance and the Community Vikings used a 3-run third inning to take a big lead as the Vikings defeated the Middle Tennessee Monarchs 5-1 in a baseball contest Thursday night.
Community (7-12, 2-3) took the lead in the second inning. 
After a single by James Beech and a bunt single by Jaxson Roberts, Isaiah Beech drove in a run on a Monarch fielding error as the Vikings went up 1-0.
The Vikings increased their advantage to 4-0 in the third inning. 
Paterick singled to lead off the inning and advanced to third on an error and a wild pitch. 
Mason Russell drove in Paterick with a single to give the Vikings a 2-0 lead.
After two walks, a Dallas Grooms RBI-ground out and a wild pitch put Community up 4-0.
The Monarchs scored their lone run in the fourth inning to cut the Viking lead to 4-1, but the Vikings were able to use small ball to get the run back in the fifth.  Blaine Paschal led off with a single and advanced to second as Beech was hit by a pitch. 
After Paschal stole third, Grooms brought home Paschal with a nifty sacrifice bunt to up the Viking lead to 5-1.
Meanwhile, Paterick was up to the task on the mound for the Vikings. 
Paterick allowed just five hits while walking one and striking out three as the Monarchs could only muster one run in the game.
Paterick, Russell, and Maki Fleming each had two hits to lead the Viking 9-hit attack.
Community travels to Grundy County for a District 7-AA game Monday.
