UNIONVILLE – Emerson Petrie connected on a field goal at the buzzer to give the Community Middle Viqueens a 25-23 win over the Central Magnet Lady Tigers in a basketball matchup Monday night.
The Viqueens led for only 34 seconds of the game and did not take their first lead until the final quarter.
Stevie Dickenson and Audrina Bearden connected on treys in the opening quarter to keep the Viqueens close as the Lady Tigers took an 8-6 lead to the second quarter.
Points were at a premium in the quarter as Central Magnet outscored the Viqueens 6-5 and took a 14-11 lead into the intermission.
It was more of the same in the third quarter as each team scored four points.
The Lady Tigers took an 18-15 advantage to the fourth quarter.
Central Magnet led 21-17 before Dickenson connected on two consecutive three-pointers. Her second trey gave the Viqueens their first lead at 23-21 with 2:40 to play.
After the Lady Tigers tied the game at 23-23 with 2:06 left, both teams had chances to take the lead in the final two minutes but were unsuccessful.
On its final possession of the game, Community inbounded the ball to Petrie near the basket. Despite double-team pressure, Petrie made the shot to give the Viqueens the hard-fought win.
Dickenson had 11 points to lead the Viqueens.
Claire Shumake led the Lady Tigers with 11 points.
Community travels to Forrest for a 6 p.m. game Thursday night.
