The only hitch in this year’s annual Halls Mill Sorghum Squeeze were the ones attached to a mule. Despite the pandemic, the results prove another successful harvest at 225 Paschal Road, according to organizers.

Attendees were once again invited to bring their lawn chairs, sit a spell, and get re-acquainted with their neighbors or meet new ones. The fall weather couldn’t have been finer for such last Saturday, organizers note.

Sorghum is a sweet, dark, heavy syrup made by cooking the juice squeezed from sorghum cane, which looks similar to field corn and makes a cone-shaped seed head filled with tiny seeds. Many of those working the sorghum learned the technique early in their lives on their respective farms.

Similar to maple syrup, the sweet juice cooks down into syrup. Its qualities are somewhat like that of molasses and can be often used in place of molasses in many recipes.

Lunch, always a crowed-pleaser, was served on the grounds again this season. Entertainment featured local favorites Double Shot followed by another favorite local group, the Mid State Cloggers.

Whether observing from a wagon or busily skimming the cane juice, everyone found their favorite place to be during the traditional event. It was another fun day in the Halls Mill community, according to organizers.
