Bedford County schools will return to scholastic activities in a limited capacity on June 1, to include sports, as teams look to prepare for the upcoming 2020-21 season.
“It is our goal to maintain a safe and healthy school community and position our schools to normal scholastic activities in the fall. We want to safely return our students and instructors to school activities with limited restrictions,” Bedford County School Superintendent Don Embry said. “All sports and other scholastic activities can return under the direction and supervision of the building principal. All TSSAA rules regarding off season and/or sports calendar are still in effect.”
The following guidelines should be followed:
•All workout sessions are totally voluntary by the students.
•Coaches should check the temperature of each student upon arrival. Students with a temperature of 100 or over must be sent home. Students will not be allowed to return until fever gone for three days.
•Coaches should ask the students the following questions upon arrival:
— Are you feeling OK today?
— Do you have an unexplained cough?
— Have you been exposed to anyone with COVID-19?
— Have you had a temperature in the last 24 hours?
•Social distancing must take place at all times. No more than groups of 10 shall be together. (9 players + Coach). More than 1 group may be brought in as long as distancing is maintained and groups are separated.
•No contact drills, or camps are allowed in the month of June. No 7-on-7 contests to take place in the month of June.
•Weight Equipment must be sanitized, wiped down after each use. Weight lifting that involves a spotter is prohibited due to social distancing.
•Coaches are highly encouraged to focus on strictly conditioning for the first week.
“These guidelines will be in effect until the dead period. After the dead period, we will evaluate everything and adjust accordingly,” Embry said.
“If we receive any changes from the Governor’s office or the TSSAA, we will notify you (administrators/coaches). We know the player’s need to start getting back into shape and back in the swing of things. We try to reach a balance between everything and we will go into this gradually. We can make adjustments and expand it more as time goes on.”
