TWICE IS NICE: Vikings repeat as district champs

UNIONVILLE - After graduating four starters from last season's district basketball championship team and with an offseason and regular season that loomed with uncertainty, it was unsure what the Community Viking postseason would look like in 2020-21.

With a 10-7 record, the Vikings gelled with nine consecutive wins and can now add another banner to their gymnasium.

Community (19-7) dissected the Central Magnet Tiger defense with precision passing and unselfish play and went on to defeat the Tigers 75-62 in the finals of the District 12-AA tournament Thursday night.

The win gives the Vikings their first consecutive district crowns since 1990.

"When they do it, it's a thing of beauty," Coach Robbie Davis of the Vikings said. "It's some old school basketball and I really like it."

The Vikings came out smoking in the opening quarter.

All five Community starters scored as the Vikings made their first six shots from the field and took a 14-9 lead.

But the Tigers would be up for the challenge.

Central Magnet went on a 6-0 run to take a 15-14 lead before Will Reed connected on his second trey of the quarter to put the Vikings up 17-15.

Community ended the quarter with a 19-17 lead.

Evan Petrie scored nine points as the Vikings battled the Tigers tooth and nail in the second quarter.

The Tigers led 22-20 before Petrie connected on a field goal to give Community the lead for good at 26-24 with 3:54 left. Central Magnet stayed close as the Vikings took a 34-30 lead into the intermission.

With Reed scoring 10 third quarter points, the Vikings started to put some distance between themselves and the Tigers.

The Vikings started the quarter hot with five straight points to go up 39-30.

Community used its patience to find the open man for easy layups and went on an 8-0 run to lead 49-34 before settling for a 53-41 lead heading to the final quarter.

Jackson Bailey scored nine points as the Vikings used an early 6-0 run to take their biggest lead at 61-43 with 5:22 remaining.

The Tigers cut the Viking lead to 64-54 with 2:49 left but could not get closer.

Reed connected on 7-of-8 free throws as Central Magnet was forced to foul down the stretch.

Community extended its lead as the Viking starters left the floor to a huge ovation in the final minute.

Reed had 25 points to lead three Vikings in double figures. Petrie added 21 points and Bailey had 18.

Elijah Conard led three Tigers in double figures with 18 points.

The Vikings were 13-of-17 at the free throw line while Central Magnet was 8-of-13.

Community will host Stewart County Saturday night in a quarterfinal game of the Region 6-AA tournament.

Stewart County, the fourth-seed from District 11-AA, lost to Camden in its district's consolation game.

***Davis on his team's play in the second half

Some of our guys took some one-pass 3s. I was very unhappy with it. Once we got the floor spaced in the fourth quarter and they had to come out, our guys are really good about getting the ball in the middle of the floor and cutting behind the defense.

Davis on his team's unselfishness: "These kids hang out together and they're all buddies. They love seeing other guys succeed. We share the ball well and our basketball IQ is pretty good.

***Davis on the progression of his team during the season

We knew when the season started we had the talent to have a really good year. We had five guys returning that had played against the guys left last year and played a lot of quality minutes. We were concerned about developing a bench because those guys had not had any varsity time at all. We've lost seven and they were all close losses. We really figured how to finish games.

***Davis on figuring out who was going to be the scorer on this year's team compared to last year:

When you're looking around and lose 4,500 points, somebody's got to score and we had to figure out who that guy was going to be. We figured out it didn't have to be one guy but could be a different guy every night.

***Davis on playing in the AA classification

With a school our size and some twice our size and definitely bigger than we are, it's really nice to know your guys can go out there and compete on a very high level.
