Santa’s “elves” were busy working early Thursday morning, packing Christmas food boxes for local veterans at the Masonic Lodge.
The Big Brothers Food Drive, sponsored by American Legion Post 23, garnered 250 non perishable boxes. Tim Estes, local organizer, said earlier this week that he already had nearly 200 requests for the Christmas food.
Leftover boxes will be distributed to the needy, Estes said. He added, however, that most of the food is generally needed by local veterans.
Several groups and concerned citizens gathered to pack the groceries, including members of the U.S. Navy, Girl Scouts, local veterans and high school students.
“We look forward to this every Christmas,” said Estes, as workers loaded boxes and trucks with food.
