UNIONVILLE - The Community Vikings battled back in the eighth inning to get within one run, but could not get closer as the Forrest Rockets defeated the Vikings 7-6 in extra innings in a District 12-AA baseball matchup Monday night.

The Rockets scored one run in the top of the first inning and used a 2-run homer in the third to take a 3-0 lead before the Vikings fought back in the bottom of the third.

Mason Russell singled and Will Reed walked to put two Vikings on base with two out.

Evan Petrie drove home the first Viking run with an RBI-double to get Community (13-9, 2-5) within 3-1.

Dylan Norris followed with a 2-run single to tie the game at 3-3.

The Rockets went ahead 4-3 in the fourth inning and threatened in the fifth, but the Vikings got out of a bases-loaded jam to stay within one run.

A Reed walk and Norris double set the stage for an RBI-single by Jacob Cooper in the bottom of the fifth as the Vikings tied the game at 4-4.

A Viking double play squelched a Forrest rally in the sixth and Community survived a jam in the seventh as the Rockets put two runners on base.

Meanwhile, the Vikings put two runners on base with one out in the sixth but could not score as the game headed to extra innings.

After the first batter was retired in the top of the eighth, the Rockets used four hits to bring home three runs as Forrest took a 7-4 lead.

The Vikings clawed back in the bottom of the eighth.

Three consecutive walks loaded the bases before Petrie drove home two runs with a two-out double to get Community within 7-6.

With the tying and winning runs in scoring position, the Vikings could not do any more damage as a strikeout ended the game.

Petrie, Norris, Corey Paterick, and Russell each had two hits to lead the Viking nine-hit attack.

Jacob Hawkins started on the mound for the Vikings with Reed in relief in the seventh inning.
