MURFREESBORO - A lead in the state tournament is never safe until the final buzzer.

The Community Vikings led by 13 points late in the third quarter, but foul trouble and a tough rebounding fourth quarter were the downfall as the Kingston Yellow Jackets defeated the Vikings 75-64 in overtime in a TSSAA Class AA quarterfinal game Thursday morning.

In a closely called game that featured several runs, Community (23-8) was undaunted by the big stage and increased its advantage in each of the first three quarters.

Jackson Bailey scored the first five Viking points as Community jumped out to an early lead.

Bailey finished with seven points while Evan Petrie added five as the Vikings finished the first quarter with the final four points and took a 16-13 advantage to the second quarter.

A four-point play by Stratton Lovvorn completed an 8-0 run and gave the Vikings a 20-13 lead with 7:28 left in the quarter.

A 5-0 Yellow Jacket run closed the Community lead to 20-18 before the Vikings went on another run.

Will Reed had six points while Petrie added five free throws as the Vikings used 10 consecutive points to go up 31-20 with 2:54 remaining.

The Vikings ended the half with a 35-28 lead.

Despite the Vikings increasing their lead in the third quarter, their foul situation was starting to take a toil.

Reed led the way with five points as Community took its biggest lead at 47-34 with 45 seconds left, but Bailey and Lovvorn both picked up their fourth fouls.

Kingston scored the final three points and cut the Viking lead to 47-37 heading to the final quarter.

It got worse to start the quarter as Jacob Cooper of the Vikings picked up his fourth and fifth fouls.

The Yellow Jackets scored the first seven points and cut the Community lead to three before a Lovvorn trey gave the Vikings a 50-44 lead with 5:20 remaining.

Kingston continued to hit the glass, especially on the offensive end, and used an offensive rebound to connect on a 3-point play with 4:21 left to trim the Viking lead to 52-49.

The play was costly for Community as Bailey fouled out of the contest.

With several new combinations, the Vikings battled and used a three-pointer by Reed to go up 55-52 with 3:08 remaining.

The lead seesawed as the Yellow Jackets followed with a field goal after a Reed basket to take a 59-58 lead with 58 seconds left.

After holding the ball for several seconds, the Vikings were unsuccessful on a 3-point attempt.

The Vikings had one final chance in regulation after a Yellow Jacket free throw gave Kingston a 60-58 lead with 15 seconds remaining.

The Vikings struggled to get off a shot against the Yellow Jacket defense, but in a scramble under the basket, Petrie found Lovvorn for a layup with one second left to tie the game at 60-60 and bring on overtime.

Community could not take the lead in the first minute of the overtime as Kingston drew first blood. The Yellow Jackets connected on two field goals in a five-second span and took a 64-60 lead with 2:48 left.

The Yellow Jackets scored their next eight points from the foul line and took control with a 72-61 lead with 1:09 to play.

The Vikings continued to fight as Reed nailed a three-pointer with 1:00 left.

The trey was Reed's last points as a Viking and moved him into the 1,000-point club as he finished his career at Community with 1,002 points.

The Yellow Jackets finished with three free throws as the Vikings exited from the tournament after making their first appearance since 1944.

Colby Raymer scored 21 points to lead three Yellow Jackets in double figures.

Reed led four Vikings in double figures with 24 points.

Petrie had 14 points and Bailey had 13 before fouling out.

Lovvorn added 12 points.

Kingston was 31-of-41 at the free throw line while the Vikings were 13-of-20.

The Yellow Jackets out-rebounded the Vikings 46-33.

Half of the 46 Kingston rebounds were on the offensive boards.

It was the final game on the hardwood for seniors Reed, Bailey, Petrie, and Cooper.

***Coach Robbie Davis of the Vikings on a game of runs:

They're good at what they do. Their two guys are really good at getting to the basket. We couldn't contain them for a little while, especially in the second half. They did a great job of getting to the basket and finishing. Uncharacteristically, we didn't rebound very well. We missed some assignments. When you have two teams battling like that, the ball is going to kick around a little bit. Hats off to them. They really brought it to the second half for sure.

***Davis on playing through foul trouble:

It was unfamiliar. We weren't used to being in a situation where we were in that much foul trouble at that point in the game. We tried to work it the best we could. We've always had a little sub pattern that we do with it. It was tough for sure. We had to move some guys around position-wise and ask them to do stuff we hadn't done all year. When you're playing in a place that's a little foreign to you, it can get to you a little bit.

***Davis on Reed scoring his 1,000th point:

For Will to get 1,000 points, starting with that group he played with last year, we graduated three 1,000-point scorers. There weren't a lot of shots to go around for a long time. It means a lot that he was able to get it.

***Davis on the legacy of the senior class:

I looked the other day and in the last two years, this group is 55-10. That's outstanding. These guys are going to leave here with two sub-states and two region championships. If you look at the banners in our gym, that hasn't been done before. Being one of the smallest AA schools in the state, it means a lot. It means a lot to a lot of people."
