McMINNVILLE – The Community Viqueen offense was clicking in the opening quarter, but the Viqueens had a hard time finding the basket in the middle quarters as the Lady Pioneers took a 49-39 win in a Hall of Champions game on Saturday.

Community (0-2) jumped out to a quick 7-2 lead in the opening quarter.

With Breanna Whitaker and Haley Mitchell each scoring five points, the Viqueens used a late 6-0 run to break an 11-11 tie and took a 17-13 advantage to the second quarter.

The Lady Pioneers scored the first six points of the quarter to take their first lead at 19-17. The Viqueens scored five consecutive points to regain the lead before Warren County took a 24-23 lead into halftime.

An M.J. Simmons field goal in the first minute of the third quarter gave Community the lead, but the Viqueens could only manage two points the rest of the quarter. Meanwhile, the Lady Pioneers used a 9-0 run and took a 37-27 advantage into the final quarter.

Mitchell, Whitaker, and Simmons each scored four points in the quarter as the Viqueens cut the Warren County lead to nine, but it was as close as Community would get.

Sable Winfree led the Lady Pioneers with 14 points while Erica Cantrell had 12.

Simmons had 13 points to lead three Viqueens in double figures.

Mitchell netted 11 points while Whitaker added 10.

"We played well in the first quarter, but after that we relaxed and didn't stay aggressive," Coach Cody Pierce of the Viqueens said.

"It was a tough game shooting so we have to get better defensively."

Community hosted MTCS on Monday and will play at Cascade on Tuesday.
