Viqueens cold from the field in 1st half

UNIONVILLE – The Community Viqueens had too big of a hill to climb after a cold-shooting first half as the MTCS Lady Cougars defeated the Viqueens 53-36 in a basketball contest Monday night.

Community (0-3) scored the first basket of the game, but went three minutes without a point as the Lady Cougars took a 7-2 lead.

Treys by Jesa Moore and Aleah Wilson helped the Viqueen cause as MTCS took a 14-8 lead after one quarter.

The Lady Cougars scored the first 12 points of the second quarter to increase their lead to 26-8.

M.J. Simmons led the Viqueens with five points as Community scored the final five points of the quarter to trim the MTCS advantage to 29-15 at halftime.

MTCS went on an 8-0 run in the third quarter to increase its lead to 37-17.

Brianna Beech led the Viqueens with four points as the Lady Cougars led 42-24 heading to the final quarter.

Simmons scored five points as Community gained momentum and cut the MTCS lead to 47-36 with 2:05 left.

The Viqueens could not score the rest of the way as the Lady Cougars scored the final six points to take the win.

Bre'Aria Cannon scored 25 points to lead the Lady Cougars.

Simmons had 10 points to pace the Viqueens.

"We didn't start too well," Coach Cody Pierce of the Viqueens said. "We waited a little too long to start scoring and start playing a little harder."

"We've got a lot of stuff to fix. There's some fundamental stuff and some little things we need to fix that will help us in the long run," Pierce added.

Community traveled to Cascade Tuesday for an intra-county matchup.
