Viqueens deny upset-minded Lady Champs

UNIONVILLE — In two previous meetings this season, the Community Viqueens claimed a 9-3 and 6-5 win over the Lady Champs.
Having locked up the No. 2 seed in the District 7-AA standings, the upset-minded Lady Champs went into Friday night’s rivalry clash with an attack mentality at the plate.
Despite out-hitting the Viqueens, 9-7, it was Community who was able to claim a 6-1 win over Cascade.
After surrendering a leadoff double to Lady Champion senior Lani Jones, Viqueen starting pitcher Taylar Wessnar recorded the final three outs of the inning to strand Jones in scoring position.
With two outs in the bottom of the first, Community threatened with a single by Wessner and a walk by Carlie Blanton, but it was Lady Champion pitcher Brianna Horn to leave runners on base as she caught Haley Mitchell swinging.
Wessner followed with a 1-2-3 second inning before the Viqueens were able to plate the game’s first run in the bottom of the second.
Junior Zoey Dixon led off the Community second inning with a walk and followed up by stealing second.
Dixon scored the game’s first run on a RBI single by Emma Bentley, putting the Purple and Gold up, 1-0 after the second.
That lead didn’t last long.
After the Viqueen defense recorded two outs, it was Jones who came through for Cascade to knot the game at one apiece with a solo shot over the right-field fence.
The Viqueens responded in swift order with Abi Brown safely reaching via error in the bottom of the third.
She stole second and then scored the go-ahead run on a double by Wessner.
Hailey Farrar plated the third Community run of the game on a single to right, scoring Carlie Blanton.
The Viqueens put the game out of reach with a three-run fourth inning.
For Cascade, Jones and Hannah Vandriver were the top two batters, going 2-for-3, with Jones scoring the only Lady Champion run on her third-inning dinger.
Kyndal Bolden also went 2-for-3 on the night.
Community connected on seven hits and was led by Wessner and Brown, who each recorded a pair of RBIs.
Wessner also went 2-for-4 with a double as well.
She took the win from the pitcher’s circle and despite allowing nine Lady Champion hits, gave up just one run while striking out three.
Horn went the distance for Cascade and gave up six runs on seven hits, while striking out eight Viqueens.
