What a difference a game makes.
After not scoring for the final five minutes in a semifinal loss to Forrest the night before, the Community Viqueens were clicking on all cylinders as the Viqueens built a 24-point halftime lead en route to a 62-39 victory over the Giles County Lady Bobcats in the consolation matchup of the District 12-AA tournament Wednesday night.
"We jumped on them early," Coach Cody Pierce of the Viqueens said. "We hadn't really done that all year."
"It was nice to jump out early and maintain that lead," Pierce added.
Brianna Beech scored five first quarter points while Haley Mitchell and M. J. Simmons each had four as Community (12-11) scored the final eight points of the first quarter to take a 13-4 lead.
Mitchell scored 10 points as the Viqueens used a 9-0 run to take a 22-6 lead with 4:23 left. Five Community players netted points as the Viqueens took a 34-10 lead into halftime.
"We put some pressure on them. They were missing some shots and it made it tough on them early," Pierce said. "When you're scoring on offense, it makes it even tougher on them."
Mitchell had five points while Breanna Whitaker and Addison Brothers each added four as the Viqueens took their biggest lead at 43-12 with 3:06 left in the third quarter. Community ended the quarter with a 50-24 lead.
Simmons had five points in the fourth quarter as the Viqueens closed out their third place win.
Mitchell had 21 points and Simmons added 12 to lead the Viqueens. Community was also aided with 13 points from its bench.
Ari Howard led Giles County with 13 points.
The Viqueens were 4-of-7 at the free throw line while the Lady Bobcats were only 6-of-17.
Despite playing for third place, Pierce saw a lot of importance in the game as the Viqueens prepare for more postseason action.
"We played like we were a little mad we didn't win last night," Pierce said.
"That's what I wanted to do tonight. It's important to get that win and get some momentum going."
Community advances to the Region 6-AA tournament and will travel to East Hickman for a 7 p.m. quarterfinal game Friday night. East Hickman is seeded second after losing to Creek Wood in the District 11-AA championship.
