Viqueens stun Forrest with Tate’s walk-off blast

UNIONVILLE — Last season, Community met Forrest five times on the softball diamond and al five times, the Lady Rockets were able to find wins against the Viqueens, including two, one-run victories.
On Tuesday night, Community broke a streak against its backyard rival Forrest for their first win in several years on a walk-off, two-run bomb off the bat of freshman Alana Tate as the Viqueens rallied for a 7-6 win in a key District 7-AA matchup.
The game got off to a quick start for the Lady Rockets, who were able to scoot lead-off batter Macyn Kirby around the bases and score her off a Carli Warner RBI single.
The Lady Rocket lead was short-lived as Community struck back with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning on RBI singles by Zoey Dixon and Tate, giving Community a 2-1 lead.
That score stood until the Lady Rockets pushed the tying run across the plate in the third inning on a Taylor Goodman RBI single.
Forrest went on to take the lead on a three-run bomb in the fourth inning off the bat of Sarah King.
The Lady Rockets stretched their lead, and seemingly their grip on the lead, in the top of the seventh inning with a sac-fly RBI, bumping their advantage to 6-2.
With their backs against the wall, Community came out swinging in the bottom of the seventh and led off with three-straight singles by Anna Haskins, Abby Murrill and Abi Brown.
Haskins scored the first run of the inning on a throwing error by Forrest and then Dixon knocked in two more runs on a double to center field, bringing Tate to the plate.
With one on and trailing by two with no outs, Tate smashed the game-winning home run to left field to give the Viqueens their walk-off victory and take a key win in the District 7-AA race.
Tate was the top run producer for the Viqueens, driving in three runs and going 2-for-3 with the game-winner in the bottom of the seventh.
Dixon also had a stellar night at the plate, going 2-for-4 with three RBIs as well.
Annie Prince got the start in the circle and pitched five innings, giving up five runs on nine hits before Haskins took over and pitched the final two innings.
Haskins gave up one run on four hits.
