Virginia Ann Haynes, 95, passed peacefully into her next life on Monday evening, May 4, 2020 after a long illness, with her son and caregiver by her side.
She was born in Franklin, Tenn., on October 25, 1924, to George Franklin Knox and Katie Coop Knox. After her father passed away, her family moved to their farm on Fairfield Pike in Bedford County, when Virginia Ann was six. Her mother, along with Virginia Ann and her four siblings, tended the farm for years. Virginia Ann attended Shelbyville Central High School where she met her future husband, William Clarence “Buddy” Haynes, Jr., when he approached her under the guise of needing help with his studies in English class. After high school Virginia Ann attended Bowling Green Business College where she mastered the skills needed for a long career as a legal secretary. She began working for the law firm of Bobo & Tarpley in Shelbyville, remaining with the firm through its most recent successor, Bobo, Hunt & White. During her tenure as Office Manager and legal secretary, she mentored many young women into successful careers with her firm, demanding quality that was underpinned by her warm heart. Virginia Ann retired from the law firm after 50 years and filled her time with reading, flower gardening, cooking, traveling, and managing a residential rental business with her husband. She was a lifelong member of First Christian Church.
In addition to her parents, Virginia Ann was predeceased by sisters, Marie Clark and husband, Albert; Mildred Trotter and her husband, Butch; brothers, Dolphus Knox and his wife, Jean; and Joe Frank Knox and his wife, Gertrude. She was also predeceased by her husband of 71 years, William Clarence “Buddy” Haynes, Jr., son, John Lynn Haynes, and daughter, Karen Haynes Davis and her husband, Maynard.
She is survived by son, William Knox Haynes of Lexington, Kentucky, grandsons William Benjamin Young of Nashville, Tenn., Alexander Knox Haynes Young (Jennifer) of Santa Cruz, California, great-grandson Burton Young of Nashville, Tenn., special niece, Marsha Clark Mangrum (Michael) and grand-niece, Amber Clark Williams, both of Nashville, Tenn., special friend, Judy Stone of Manchester, Tenn., along with many other friends.
Knox would like to thank Caregivers Melinda, Penny, Carolyn, Victoria, Scarlett, Rosa, Maribel, Jean, Jessica, Martha, and Chanell for their outstanding care of his mother during her long illness. He would also like to thank the staff of Hospice Compassus for providing excellent care.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. April 22, 2023, at First Christian Church. Reverend Tom Bierovic will officiate with internment to follow in Hazel Cemetery in Bell Buckle.
The family will receive visitors one hour prior to the service on Saturday at the church. Lunch will be served at First Christian Church at approximately 1:30 p.m., following the interment of ashes in Bell Buckle.
