MANCHESTER, Tenn. – With both teams knowing their season would end in the final week of the regular season, Shelbyville Central (1-9, 0-6) and Coffee County (3-7, 1-5) put together a one-possession Region 6-6A thriller that resulted in a 28-21 Red Raiders’ win on Friday night at the Coffee County Raider Academy.
The careers of 13 seniors for the Golden Eagles came to an end in the defeat, but despite the 1-9 record, Jud Dryden had some meaningful words to say about his Class of 2026.
“This group [of seniors] hung with us through every up and every down,” he said postgame, “They showed up every single day from the moment they stepped onto the field as freshmen to tonight, they showed every single day the heart and conviction that it takes to play high school football. More importantly, they showed through their actions how much they cared about all their teammates that they played with from day one.”
After taking a 7-0 lead on a 90-yard catch-and-run touchdown from Cyonn Rucker on the first play from scrimmage, the Golden Eagles committed three turnovers in the first half that allowed Coffee County to take a 21-7 lead heading into the halftime locker room. However, Shelbyville Central settled down in the second half, fighting back to trim the deficit to one score multiple times in the fourth quarter before eventually coming up just short.
“We just had to calm down and take a breath,” said Drydem, “Halftime came at the right time just to let us settle down and then we played relatively mistake-free football in the second half, especially compared to the first half. We put them in great positions to make plays, came out of halftime settled, and we were ready to play ball.”
After a pair of scoreless Raider drives sandwiched a Shelbyville Central turnover-on-downs, Laron Brown provided a jolt of electricity with an impressive 58-yard touchdown run down the right sideline after breaking two or three tackle attempts from Coffee County defenders. Brown, who finished with 14 carries for a team-high 122 rushing yards and the one score, trimmed the hosts’ lead to 21-14 with 11:41 to go in the fourth quarter.
However, three plays later, Coffee County found paydirt thanks to a 32-yard touchdown scamper from Lowerey to double the lead to 28-14 with 10:50 remaining.
Despite taking another heavy punch, the Golden Eagles responded once again thanks to two incredible plays from Cyonn Rucker, who started the season as full-time quarterback. Rucker first somehow hauled in a 50/50 ball on the right sideline over the defender, finding a way to get one foot inbounds while maintaining possession to get into Red Radier territory. Two plays later, Hudson Oaks lofted a beautiful go-ball down the left sideline for Rucker to run underneath and waltz into the end zone for a 39-yard touchdown that trimmed the lead to 28-21 with 8:22 left.
“Cyonn [Rucker] is a phenomenal athlete, and you’ve got to get your best guys the ball as often as you can,” Dryden said about his budding sophomore, “[Splitting him out at wide receiver] was a different way we could get the ball in his hands. Hudson Oaks has come along very well, and the more he understood, the more we could utilize Cyonn that way. It’s a good one-two punch for us. It spreads the field and does a bunch of things for us.”
Unfortunately for the Golden Eagles, that would be the last time they touched the ball until there were 10 seconds left. Coffee County responded with an impressive 13-play, 59-yard march that didn't produce any points, but did eat up a whopping 8:00 of clock. The hosts leaned on Corontez Garrett, who finished with 24 carries for a game-high 125 yards and one touchdown on the night. Despite stopping the Raiders on 4th-and-1 from the nine, Shelbyville Central simply did not have enough time to mount any game-tying drive, and the clock ran out.
The defeat marked the fourth one-score loss in the final five games of the season. Shelbyville Central finishes 1-4 in one-possession games this year. A large part of that was the youth on the field for much of 2026 which provides Dryden with excitement for the 2027 campaign.
“We’ll be returning a lot of guys [for 2027],” he said, “We played a lot of younger guys throughout this year consistently. At any given moment you look out there and see five sophomores and a freshman with some juniors and only two seniors sometimes. Our returners got great reps. They were great in practice, and got great experience that will take them forward.”
Despite the prevalent youth and rough results, Dryden saw persistent fight from his entire group all season, not just amongst the senior class.
“It was amazing to watch our younger guys continue to fight every single day for their seniors,” he explained, “ That’s something that will carry us into this coming offseason and into next year. That willingness to give everything for someone else, that’s what this game is all about. It was great to see that top to bottom.”
Following Rucker’s 90-yard touchdown, Coffee County’s Kaysen Lowerey capped off a 70-yard touchdown drive with a four-yard plunge into the end zone for the Raider’s first touchdown of the night to even the score at 7-7 with 9:03 to go in the first quarter.
Shelbyville Central threw its first of three first-half interceptions on a screen pass intended for Jackson Themm. Coffee County took advantage of the great field position, wrapping up a 30-yard touchdown drive with a four-yard touchdown run from Garrett to take a 14-7 lead with 4:05 left in the first quarter.
The Golden Eagles threw another interception on their next drive, but then the defense rose up to turn the ball over on downs at their own 35-yard line. Shelbyville Central got in range for a 33-yard field goal attempt from Themm, but his effort from the left hash ended up sailing wide-right.
Three drives later, Coffee County doubled its lead heading into the halftime locker room on a 23-yard touchdown pass on a slant to Lowerey from Caleb Hill, growing the lead to 21-7 with 1:11 left in the first half before the Golden Eagles rallied in the fourth quarter.
Shelbyville Central finishes 2026 at 1-9 overall and misses out on the postseason for the first time under Jud Dryden.
