Samantha Galbreath plans long nursing career

Samantha Dawn Galbreath is affectionately known as the “loudest mom on the fence” as a fast pitch youth softball and baseball coach. But this spring, she’s become an even stronger voice for those aspiring to enter the health field.

Though the pandemic was obviously difficult for those in the health profession, Samantha told the T-G this week that it could not deter her dream of becoming a nurse.

“As a nurse, we are the eyes and ears for the providers. Patient education is priority for optimal health outcomes. It is the nurse’s responsibility to educate and ensure the patient is setup for success in their healing process. That’s why I want to be a nurse even after the pandemic. Pandemic or not, it was my dream, my goal, and my people need me.”

By entering into the LPN-RN program during the nation-wide pandemic—one which health professionals note negated a nursing shortage—Samantha received reimbursements for her learning costs. Samantha is among the first to receive this full benefit and in return, her employer will be able to fill a high-demand position, as a result of her dedication.

Samantha is currently employed fulltime with Aveanna Home Healthcare on North Main Street, formerly Willowbrook Home Healthcare.

Most important, by continuing to be a part of the health care field, Samantha continues to provide a “continuity of care”—something especially important in these times and in the future, her employer said.

Considering the challenges of graduating a nursing program, Samantha said her greatest supporters are no doubt her husband, Bryant Galbreath, and their two children, Harris and Katherine. The family attends Victory Baptist Church in Shelbyville.

The Motlow nursing student has already earned her own successes within her profession. Galbreath was selected to represent Motlow State Community College in Lynchburg as a nominee in the 2021-2022 All-USA Academic Team competition and was one of a limited number of students per campus selected for nomination for the All-USA / Coca-Cola Academic Team—one which recognizes high achievers who demonstrate academic excellence, leadership and service beyond the classroom to benefit society.

“Your commitment to academic excellence and community service is commendable. You will now be placed in competition for the All-USA Academic Team, Coca-Cola Academic Team, and the New Century Pathway Scholarship Awards. Phi Theta Kappa will notify scholars of their placement on national teams by April 2022,” a letter stated.

Samantha is a part of Motlow’s graduating class of licensed practical nursing students; she will graduate soon as a member of the MSCC registered nursing program. Her honors include being the recipient of the Harvey Butler Graham Nursing Scholarship while enrolled within the LPN-RN program. She was the LPN class representative, and a member of Phi Theta Kappa and Psi Beta honor societies.

Samantha plans to continue her education and earn her degree as a nurse practitioner with a focus on mental health. She aspires one day to open a mental health facility, which will serve patients with traumatic brain injuries, substance abuse, eating disorders, and other forms of abuse.

As a voice for others, Samantha continues to advocate for The Haven of Hope and says she has a most soft heart for students with disabilities and their need for accommodations.
