DALLAS – On the heels of the 16th 20-win season in MTSU history, four Blue Raiders have earned Conference USA post-season honors, as announced by the league office Monday afternoon. Essam Mostafa led the way, being named Newcomer of the Year and All-CUSA First Team. Torey Alston picked up CUSA All-Freshman team honors, while Jestin Porter was named to the Second Team for the second-consecutive season and Camryn Weston was voted All-CUSA Honorable Mention.
Essam Mostafa | Newcomer of the Year, First Team All-CUSA
In his first and only season in CUSA, Essam Mostafa has become one of the top names in the league. After transferring in from TCU this offseason, he has become essentially a walking double-double, averaging 14.2 points per game and 9.2 boards per contest. He leads the league in double-doubles, totaling 13 to date, good for 18th in the nation. Mostafa has the second-best field goal percentage in the league at 59.9. which ranks 16th in the country.
The Cairo, Egypt, native is a known threat on the glass and leads the conference in total rebounds (277), offensive rebounds per game (3.43) and rebounds per game (9.2). His 14.2 points per game rank ninth in the league and his 5.80 defensive rebounds per game are third.
With 26 double-digit scoring games this season, he's got 16 this conference season and four double-doubles in league play. Four of his five 20-point contests came during conference games and he made program history at home against Liberty, dropping 30 points and pulling in 20 rebounds, the first time in modern history that stat line has been posted and just the third time in CUSA history. His 20 rebounds are the most by a CUSA player this year and are tied for 11th in Division I this season.
Mostafa's Newcomer of the Year award is the first conference superlative earned by a Blue Raider since 2019, when Antonio Green was named Newcomer of the Year, and his First Team nod is the first for MT since 2018, when Nick King was voted to the top post-season team.
Jestin Porter | Second Team All-CUSA
After being named All-Conference last season, Jestin Porter continued to thrive in his traditional role at the 2. He is one of just two Blue Raiders to start in every game this season and leads the team in minutes averaged with 33:04. Porter leads the team in points per game (14.8) and steals (1.26) and sits third in assists (1.26).
In week two of conference play, the Houston, Texas, native averaged 28.0 points per game on 49 percent shooting from the field and 43 percent from three. He made nine field goals in each of the contests at home against Kennesaw State and Jax State, including six threes against the Gamecocks.
On the road at Sam Houston, he tied his career high with eight made three pointers for 28 points. Porter has tallied nine 20+ point games this season, including four in conference play. He has scored in double figures in 12 league games to date, including in 11 consecutive games. Porter tied his career high in steals in the Murphy Center against Jax State, snatching four from the Gamecocks.
The senior ranks second on the team in three-point percentage and shoots 40.8 percent from the field on the season. He surpassed the 1,000-point mark this season and became just the 12th Blue Raider to do it in three years or less, sitting 24th in program history with 1,111 career points.
His back-to-back postseason conference honors mark the first time since Giddy Potts in 2017 and 2018. Porter is the first Blue Raider since Reggie Upshaw in 2016 and 2017 to be voted Second Team in two consecutive seasons.
Camryn Weston | Honorable Mention All-CUSA
A preseason All-CUSA pick, Cam Weston did not disappoint in his first season back from an ACL injury. Coming off the bench, he has been the first sub for Middle Tennessee in 13 contests this season. He leads the team in total assists with 107 to date for an average of 3.5 per contest. His 3.5 assists per game are the most of anyone who comes off the bench in the league.
Weston averages 27:08 minutes per game off the bench, the second most of any Blue Raider and his 11.9 points per game also rank third on the team. At home against UTEP, he dished out 14 assists, a career high and ties for fifth in program history. The 14 dimes were the second-most in a single game by a conference player and the most in a conference game by a CUSA player.
The Albany, Ga., native totaled 20 double-digit scoring games, including two 30-point performances this season. He is a two-time CUSA Player of the Week honoree, most recently after averaging 20.5 points per game in a road sweep over NM State and UTEP. He earned 30 points in Las Cruces, N.M., making a career-high four threes on 8-for-11 shooting.
This is the second postseason accolade for Weston, who also earned Honorable Mention All-CUSA after the 2022-23 season.
Torey Alston | CUSA All-Freshman
In just his first year of collegiate basketball, Torey Alston has taken the league by storm, cracking a spot in the starting lineup for the Blue Raiders. He started every conference game and is one of just four freshmen to start for their respective teams.
He began his collegiate career with a double-double on opening day, tallying 11 points and 13 rebounds and added another double-double performance in December. Alston brings down an average of 5.6 boards per game, the second most of any CUSA freshman and the second most of any Blue Raider. He is also tied for the freshman lead in blocks per game, averaging 1.0.
Alston blocked a team-high five shots at NM State, the best blocking performance of a CUSA freshman this season and the second best of any league player. The Durham, N.C., native averages 6.4 points per game, the sixth most of any Blue Raider. His two double-doubles this season are the most of any CUSA freshman.
The Blue Raiders have had a player earn a nod to the All-Freshman team two years in a row, with Chris Loofe being named to the team last season.
