Bettie Mae Carroll Self passed from this life at her home on September 24, 2024. She was there with the loving care of her family and Compassus Hospice. Bettie was born on March 8, 1929, to the late Frank and Lula Carroll.
She is survived by her daughters, Lea Ann (Buddy) Richter and Mickey (Tom) McLean, sisters Sarah Hill, Sandra Smith, Jane Tittsworth and brother Ben (Monika) Carroll. Her grandchildren experienced “Granny’s” love. They are Amy Richter (Anthony) Reitz, Daniel Richter and Sarah Stone, Angela Holt (Evan) Satterfield, Jonathan (Caroline) Holt, Josh (Amy) Holt, Matthew (Hansell)Holt, and Andrew (Alix) McLean. She is also survived by 12 great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband Erwin B. Self, daughter Sandy Self Holt and grandson Ben McLean. Also preceding her were sisters Geneva Nichols and Pat Waggoner, brothers, Avery “Bud” Carroll and Roy F. “Buck” Carroll.
Bettie was a devoted mother and homemaker. She had fond memories of her early years at Shelbyville Mills School and later as a member of the Shelbyville Eaglettes basketball team at Shelbyville Central High School. Bettie reminisced about her working experiences at Taylor’s Grocery Store on the square and the Shelbyville Times Gazette. After her marriage in 1949 she was dedicated to her family and honed her exceptional sewing talents. These skills often involved tailored window treatments, furniture coverings and specialty clothing for her girls. Bettie’s cooking skills were enjoyed by many, and she was committed to making every holiday a memorable one with her baked goods.
Her zest for life and “do it all myself” nature was witnessed by those who had the joy of knowing this caring lady.
Memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church in Shelbyville or a charity of your choice.
Funeral services were 2 PM Sunday, September 29, 2024, at Feldhaus Memorial Chapel. Revs. Abe Zimmerman and David Adams officiated, with burial in Hillcrest Memorial Gardens.
The family received visitors 12 noon until service time Sunday at the funeral home.
Pall Bearers were Anthony Reitz, Daniel Richter, Andrew McLean, Evan Satterfield, Jonathan Holt, Josh Holt, Matthew Holt.
Honorary Pall bearers are Jack Satterfield and Sam Satterfield.
