MURFREESBORO, Tenn - MTSU baseball drops both games in doubleheader against the Jacksonville State Gamecocks on Sunday, May 4 at Reese Smith Jr. Field.
GAME ONE
The Blue Raiders gave up three runs in the top of the first inning and allowed at least one run in four of the first five frames. Offensively, MTSU showed promise in the opening inning, as Tyler Minnick launched a two-run homer to left center following a leadoff single from Eston Snider. Brett Vondohlen added a solo home run in the sixth, but that was all the scoring Middle Tennessee could muster.
Minnick and Vondohlen accounted for two of the Blue Raiders' four hits, while Keaton Ray chipped in a double.
Starter Colin Kerrigan took the loss, surrendering six runs (five earned) on six hits over 4.2 innings. He struck out five and walked three. The Gamecocks capitalized on MTSU's defensive miscues, as the Blue Raiders committed three errors that led to unearned runs.
Jacksonville State pulled away with a five-run seventh inning to seal the win.
GAME TWO
After a late scratch of RHP Drew Horn on the mound, Landen Burch was given the nod for the series finale against the Gamecocks. He was solid allowing just three runs on three hits in the five innings he had on the bump.
MTSU was down 1-0 early in the first, but would tie the game up in the third with a Clay Badylak sacrifice fly that scored Brett Rogers. JSU would put up another run in the following frame, but would then again be answered by the Blue Raider offense with two runs of their own to claim the lead. Jax State would tie the game in the fifth and kept it knotted until the seventh inning.
In the top of the seventh, the Gamecocks scored a run on a hard hit double to reclaim the lead, 4-3. However, the Blue Raiders didn't back down once again as Hayden Miller would launch his 10th homer to tie it up and send the game to extras (eighth inning).
Jacksonville State proceeded to put up four runs in the eighth, and that was too much for the Blue Raiders to mount another comeback as they drop game two of the doubleheader, 4-8.
By the numbers
10 – Hayden Miller hit his 10th homer of the year to send the second game to extra innings
5 – Landen Burch had his longest outing of the year while also striking out a season-high in six batters
