Cascade Sweeps ‘Battle of Bedford’ Season Series Against Viqueens

BELL BUCKLE, Tenn. – After taking home a 3-1 win in Unionville on August 25th, the Cascade Lady Champions (9-1, 6-0) completed the season sweep over Community (4-2, 2-2) with a hard-fought 2-0 win on Thursday night.

“I feel like our girls controlled the game very well,” Cascade Head Coach Wendy Williams said postgame, “In our team meeting we talked about wanting to possess the ball tonight. We want to control the tempo of the game, and they do that. We had great passing, excellent communication and movement, so it was beautiful.”

Lexi Comstock drew a penalty in the 9th minute after a through ball put her one-on-one with the Viqueens’ keeper. Comstock got to the ball first, taking a touch around the keeper before being taken out inside the box. With Comstock taking a minute to compose herself despite seeming a bit hobbled, Olivia Winnett stepped up to bury the penalty low and hard into the keeper’s left corner to give the Lady Champions a 1-0 lead.

The Viqueens continued to sit deep and invite pressure with the intent of hitting Cascade on the counter, and this allowed the hosts to accumulate the lion’s share of possession and attacking threat as the first half waned on. However, Community maintained its shape, and outside of Rylee Harris hitting the crossbar in the 39th minute, the visitors were able to make it to the halftime break trailing by just the one goal to nil.

Nonetheless, despite the Viqueens’ resistance, Cascade was able to find the all-important second goal of the game just six minutes into the second half. In the 46th minute, Adalyn Nelms was able to control a cross from Harris in the box before using nifty skill to dribble around three defenders to free up enough space to slot the ball home into the back of the net for a 2-0 lead.

“I think we were pretty creative tonight. Community sets up a strong defense and backline, so it takes a lot of creativity to penetrate that. We worked through some things, we took a lot of shots, and there were a few things that were almost there. There’s of course always things we can work on, but I think overall it was a good showing.”

Cascade nearly found a third goal seven minutes later. In the 53rd minute, the Lady Champs sent in another dangerous ball across the six-yard box that found Kaylee Martin, but her shot was cleared off the line to keep the game at 2-0.

Community never truly threatened the hosts on the counter in the second half, and the final whistle blew with the final score staying at a comfortable 2-0.

Community falls to 4-2 overall. The Viqueens are set to travel to Huntland on Tuesday night with kickoff set for 6:00 p.m.

Cascade improves to 9-1 overall. The Lady Champions travel to Chapel Hill on Tuesday night with kickoff set for 6:00 p.m.
