Golden Eagles Fall in High-Scoring Affair At Independence

THOMPSON’S STATION, Tenn. – Despite delivering their highest scoring output of the season so far, the Shelbyville Central Golden Eagles (1-3, 0-2) were unable to get off the field defensively in a 56-42 defeat at Independence (1-3, 1-0) in a Region 6-6A battle on Friday night.

The Golden Eagles found success on the ground, rushing for a season-high 389 yards on 54 attempts as a team. Treyveon Mathis led all ballcarriers with 157 rushing yards and one touchdown on 21 carries. Laron Brown showcased his electricity primarily in the first half before seemingly picking up a minor injury early in the second half, finishing with 13 carries for 106 yards. Cyonn Rucker, who split reps with Hudson Oaks at quarterback again, tallied 79 rushing yards and one touchdown on 12 attempts.

“Our offensive line, assignment-wise, they were locked in,” Shelbyville Central Head Coach Jud Dryden said postgame, “Effort-wise, they were locked in. Running backs had a great night. We’ve got a deep running back room, and it looked good tonight. Five different guys got carries. Our freshman quarterback made some plays, and Cyonn [Rucker] looks good all over the field. We’re growing even though it is slow and steady, but finally some of the growth showed out here tonight instead of just in practice.”

However, Murray State commit Matthew Horner at quarterback for Independence was nearly flawless, finishing 14-of-18 for 327 yards and five touchdowns. His favorite target was Brody Bullock, who compiled 187 receiving yards and two touchdowns on eight receptions.

“Their quarterback, he’s obviously a talent, and then they’ve got some good wide receivers,” Dryden said, “They hit us where we are inexperienced and it showed. Every time we thought we had an opportunity to dial it up and get a stop, they hit us on one. It was just that kind of back-and-forth game.”

The game was indeed back-and-forth, starting with the opening kickoff. Ethan Willis took back the opening kick 80 yards for a touchdown, giving the hosts a 7-0 lead just 14 seconds into the game.

“We thought we could get it into kind of a strange shootout where it’s our running game against their passing game,” said Dryden, “We had those opportunities, we just botched the coverage for the opening kickoff, and we were trying to catch up from that moment on.”

Shelbyville Central responded with a seven-play, 61-yard touchdown drive that took 2:16 off the clock, culminating in a four-yard touchdown pass to Ethan McBee after Laron Brown galloped 43 yards to get into the red zone, but the extra point was blocked, leaving the score at 7-6 with 9:23 to play in the first quarter.

On Independence’s ensuing possession, the drive began on the Golden Eagles’ 48-yard line, and the hosts needed just three plays to reach the end zone after Horner found Ethan Langerbeins up the seam for a 32-yard touchdown pass with 7:58 remaining in the first quarter.

Not to be deterred, the Golden Eagles put together a second-consecutive touchdown drive by establishing their dominance on the ground. Shelbyville Central went on a 16-play, 72-yard march, using up 6:39 before finding the end zone on a 21-yard touchdown pass up the seam from Rucker to Jackson Themm for his third receiving touchdown of the season. Rucker finished 3-of-4 for 47 yards and two touchdowns through the air. After Rucker ran in the two-point conversion, the Golden Eagles found themselves tied at 14 with 1:11 to go in the period.

Unfortunately for the visitors, that would be the one and only time they would find themselves tied with Independence. The hometown Eagles needed just one play – a 57-yard touchdown pass to Bullock down the sideline – to re-take the lead at 21-14 and go in front for good with 53 seconds left in the first quarter.

As Oaks and Rucker split quarterback duties, the freshman Oaks was intercepted on the first play of the second quarter, and Independence took a little over three minutes to drive 45 yards into the end zone when Horner punched it in from a yard out to double the Independence lead at 28-14 with just over 8:30 left in the first half.

Shelbyville Central put together another drive, but they were facing a 4th-and-6 at the Independence 40-yard line with just under three minutes left in the half. Trailing by two scores and knowing his team would get the ball to start the second half, Dryden made the call to go for the first down. However, Rucker was stopped short, and the Eagles ended up scoring with 35 seconds left on a 12-yard touchdown pass to Eli Bogwill with 35 seconds to go to take a 34-14 lead heading into halftime.

Coming out of the halftime locker room, the Golden Eagles did manage to drive 70 yards for a touchdown. Treyveon Mathis found the end zone from seven yards out with 8:30 left to cap off a seven-play, 70-yard drive that took just 3:21 off the clock and cut the lead to 34-21.

However, Independence, who scored on eight of its nine possessions on the night, would not be denied. Eli Garington punctuated a 51-yard drive with a three-yard touchdown run, and after the two-point conversion was successful, the Eagles lead swelled back up to 42-21 with 6:47 in the third.

Shelbyville Central, now in a rhythm offensively, responded with a 68-yard touchdown drive that took 5:35 off the clock. Rucker ran it in from two yards out to make it a 42-28 game with 1:22 left in the third quarter.

Unfortunately for the visitors, Horner’s 13-yard touchdown pass to Bullock with 11:01 left brought the lead back up to 21 points, 49-28.

Shelbyville Central quickly responded yet again, this time with a 20-yard touchdown run by Michael Wilson to cap a 65-yard scoring drive that took 2:52 off the clock.

Needing a stop, the Golden Eagles looked like they had forced Independence into a 3rd-and-10 situation, but the flag flew for a defensive pass interference to give the Eagles a first down. The hosts would capitalize on the free first down with a 15-yard touchdown pass to Bullock to put the game away for good at 56-35 with 4:06 to go.

Jayden Nowlin found the end zonewith 22 seconds left from five yards out for the Golden Eagles, bringing the final score to 56-42.

Shelbyville Central falls to 1-3 overall. The Golden Eagles host Brentwood in another Region 6-6A affair on Friday night at 7:00 p.m.
