Outgoing Parks Department Director, Mike Alsup, is retiring to spend more time with his family. He’s given nearly 10 years of service to the City of Shelbyville-a total of 45 years in recreation management.
A reception was held in his honor Monday at the Rec Center.
During Alsup’s last parks board meeting, it was reported (April 2024 stats), that year-to-date attendance for the Recreation Center was 48,245. Center daily attendance is over 6,000.
According to the report given by Alsup, Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation (TDEC) has approved the City to complete the application for local parks and recreation (LPRF) grant dollars for phase I of the H.V. Griffin Master Plan, which includes a soccer complex, parking and road.
Alsup stated how the Trails and Greenways Master Plan is in progress with an anticipated completion date of January 2025.
Alsup has told the T-G that he has always enjoyed being with the people. During the reception on Monday, he said, “It is an honor to get to know others and serve their needs. I encourage all of you to make a difference in someone’s life, every day.”
