CHAPEL HILL — The Forrest Rockets took an early lead and held on to defeat the Community Vikings 9-5 in a District 7-AA game Thursday night.
After Corey Paterick put the Vikings ahead 1-0 with a two-out single in the second, the Rockets bounced back with four runs in the bottom of the inning with the help of a run-scoring single by Riley Durbin and a sacrifice fly by Brennan Mealer.
Each team scored a run in the third inning.
Mason Russell drove in a run for the Vikings on a sacrifice fly while the Rockets scored on a passed ball as Forrest took a 5-2 lead.
A Kason Fuller single and a Luke Allen groundout led to two runs in the fourth inning as the Rockets increased their lead to 7-2.
The Vikings bounced back in the fifth as Russell drilled a two-run homer as Community cut the Forrest lead to 7-4.
The Rockets added two insurance runs in the sixth as a passed ball and a Shawn Brown single put Forrest up 9-4.
Russell singled in a run for his fourth RBI of the night in the seventh, but it wasn't enough as the Rockets completed a two-game sweep of the Vikings.
Fuller had four hits to lead the Rockets at the plate while Russell's two hits led the Vikings.
Durbin was the winning pitcher for Forrest with Preston Gentry getting the final out in relief.
