An online scammer attempted to take $20,000 from a Shelbyville man Monday, police were told.

The victim said he was attempting to purchase computer software over the Internet. The scammer locked up the victim’s computer and claimed to have cleaned out his checking and savings accounts. He then told the victim $20,000 had been placed back into the checking account.

Orders were given for the victim to obtain $20,000 in cashier’s checks and mail them to the scammer. The victim notified his bank, which froze the victim’s account and said no money had actually been withdrawn. The computer remained inoperable, police said.
