Scott’s Chapel UMC recognized by state disparities group

Posted

This month, the TN Health Disparities Group highlighted Scott’s Chapel United Methodist Church in Shelbyville for its outstanding commitment to addressing food insecurity.
For nearly 5 years, the church has served the community through a compassionate food outreach ministry that includes a monthly drive-through distribution of nutritious food, a Blessing Box program, and emergency food assistance for individuals and families facing unexpected hardships.
Each month, dedicated volunteers distribute approximately 110 food bags and boxes to seniors, individuals experiencing homelessness, and families with limited incomes, ensuring that everyone in need is welcomed without regard to race, creed, or financial circumstances. Through thoughtful planning, community partnerships, and a strong spirit of service, Scotts Chapel has become a trusted resource for neighbors across Bedford County.
Led by Pastor Virginia Yeargins and supported by a committed team of volunteers, this ministry continues to make a meaningful impact by reducing food insecurity, promoting community wellbeing, and demonstrating how compassion and collaboration can strengthen healthier, more resilient communities.
The Division of Health Disparities Elimination (DHDE) supports the Tennessee Department of Health (TDH) in engaging and connecting populations to care, services, and resources that help eliminate health disparities across the state.
Guided by the core values — Support, Engagement, Access, and Trust — the department’s mission is that everyone deserves a seat at the table and equitable opportunities to achieve their best possible health.
