Tennessee The nation’s COVID-19 hotspot

Tennessee continues to stand at the top of the list nationwide for the number of new cases of COVID-19 Per Capita.

Tennessee counties also dominates the list of 100 counties nationwide with the highest rates of the infection. Forty-one Tennessee counties are on the top 100 list, with Bedford County in 35th place. There are a total of 3,006 counties nationwide.

In the last seven days (Dec. 14 through Dec. 20) the Tennessee health department reported 65,382 new cases of the coronavirus from 329,337 tests — a positivity rate of 19.85 percent. The CDC says that positivity rates above 10 percent cannot be relied upon to give an accurate picture of the extent of the pandemic.

Since the first day of December, 1,469 Tennessee deaths have been attributed to COVID-19.

According to the state health department, 91 percent Tennessee hospital intensive care beds are occupied by patients, leaving 186 available on Dec. 20 for the entire state. The state reported that 2,789 people were hospitalized on Dec. 20.

On Dec. 20, there were 593 active cases of COVID-19 in Bedford County. The active case count has been hovering around 600 for the past week.

According to the state health department, 1,256 residents of Bedford County have tested positive for the coronavirus since Dec. 1. Since the first day of December, there have been 4,478 tests conducted in Bedford County, resulting in a positivity rate of 28.36 percent.
