UNIONVILLE — It only took 58 minutes for the Community Viqueens to complete their opening round game of the District 7-AA softball tournament as the Viqueens sent 14 batters to the plate in the first inning and scored 10 runs en route to a 16-0 victory over the Grundy County Lady Jackets Monday night.
Abby Murrill and Abi Brown combined for six hits and drove in eight runs at the top of the order to lead the Viqueens at the plate while pitchers Haley Mitchell and Zoey Dixon combined for a no-hitter.
Community (16-9-1), the number one seed in the tournament, wasted little time getting its offense going in the opening inning after celebrating Senior Night in pregame festivities.
Murrill and Brown each had two hits in the inning as the Viqueens belted seven safeties.
Brown's second hit was a home run to go along with a double while Mitchell, Chloe West, and Taylar Wessner added hits as the Viqueen hitting parade was in full force.
After inadvertently taking a throw from the Lady Jacket catcher on the arm during her at-bat, senior Abigail Brooks stayed in the game and contributed a key sacrifice bunt that brought home two runs as Community ended the inning with a 10-0 lead.
It was Murrill and Brown leading the way as the Viqueens upped their lead in the second inning.
After singles by Carlie Blanton and Anna Haskins, Murrill drove in two runs with a single and Brown blasted her second homer of the game as the Viqueens increased their lead to 14-0.
The Viqueens finished the game on the run-rule with two runs in the third inning as West was hit by a pitch and Wessner followed with a home run to right field.
Mitchell started on the mound for the Viqueens with Dixon relieving in the third inning.
Community will now host Forrest Tuesday night in the winners' bracket final. The teams split their two regular season games with each side winning by one run on its home field.
