UNIONVILLE — The Community Viqueens jumped out to an 11-0 lead just two minutes into the game and never looked back as the Viqueens defeated the Whites Creek Lady Cobras 71-22 in a quarterfinal game of the Region 4-AA tournament Friday night.
With the Viqueen tandem of M.J. Simmons and Haley Mitchell scoring from the paint and beyond the perimeter in the first half, Community (23-6) was off to the races.
Simmons scored the first points just 20 seconds into the game and Mitchell connected on three consecutive treys as the Viqueens used a tenacious full-court press to take their initial 11-point lead.
With Simmons scoring 14 first-quarter points and Mitchell tallying nine, Community scored the final 16 points and took a 31-4 lead to the second quarter.
Mitchell, Simmons, and Shelby Cawthon each scored six points as the Viqueens kept up the pressure in the quarter.
Community went on runs of 9-0 and 15-0 while holding the Lady Cobras to single digits in the first half as the Viqueens took a 55-9 advantage into the intermission.
"We did get off to a good start and the defense made things a lot easier," Coach Cody Pierce of the Viqueens said. "We put a lot of pressure on them and had a lot of easy layups that helped."
The Viqueens increased their lead to 61-10 with 4:22 remaining in the third quarter before the starters exited the game and the Community bench took over for the remainder of the contest.
Raegan Haley scored six points in the final four minutes as the Viqueens took a 69-12 lead to the final quarter.
The Lady Cobras had their best offensive output with 10 points as the fourth quarter was played with a running clock.
"It was nice to get everybody out there and get everybody some work," Pierce said.
Simmons finished with 24 points and Mitchell had 15 to lead the Viqueens.
Rickiya Rawlings led the Lady Cobras with eight points.
The Viqueens were 11-of-13 from the charity stripe while Whites Creek was 5-of-12.
"I think we played solid," Pierce said.
"Whites Creek did defend when they were able to back into a half-court defense, and we had to move the ball and take whatever they gave us," Pierce added. "I think we got something from it tonight."
With the win, the Viqueens will entertain Pearl Cohn Monday night at 6 p.m. in the semifinals of the region tournament which is being hosted by Community.  Pearl Cohn defeated Cascade in another region quarterfinal game.
"There's 32 teams left after tonight," Pierce said. "Monday, half of them go home, so we want to take care of that Monday."
