UNIONVILLE – The Community Middle Viqueens led for most of the game, but fell behind and used a late fourth quarter basket and overtime to defeat the Forrest Lady Rockets 44-40 in a basketball contest Monday night.
The Viqueens used five points each from Izzy Martinez and Bailey Helton to go on an 8-0 run and ended the first quarter with a 10-6 lead.
The Lady Rockets cut the Viqueen lead to two in the second quarter, but a three-pointer by Kylie Dalton in the final minute extended the Community advantage to 17-11 at halftime.
Points were scarce in the third quarter, but the Viqueens had the upper hand by outscoring Forrest 6-5 and took a 23-16 advantage to the final quarter.
The Lady Rockets got back in the game with an 18-point quarter and tied the game at 30-30 with 45 seconds left.
Forrest took a 34-32 lead with 10 seconds remaining, but Martinez connected on a layup with two seconds left to tie the game at 34-34 and bring on overtime.
Forrest led early in the extra period, but the Viqueens used two field goals from Stevie Dickenson to go on a 6-0 run and took a 40-36 advantage with 1:35 left.
After the Lady Rockets tied the game at 40-40 with 54 seconds remaining, Brailey Whitehead connected on a field goal with 40 seconds left to give Community a 42-40 lead.
A late steal and basket by Helton provided the final margin of victory.
Helton led the Viqueens with 15 points while Martinez added nine.
Community travels to Central Magnet for a 6 p.m. game Thursday night.
