BELL BUCKLE, Tenn. – The Cascade Champions (10-7, 1-1) picked up their first District 9-AA win of the season at The Stable over the visiting Rockets from Chapel Hill (5-11, 0-3) on Friday night.
After giving up 66 points against Cannon County to open district play, Cascade held Chapel Hill to 27% shooting from the field overall, including just 2/15 from downtown, while forcing 20 turnovers. Cascade didn’t shoot much better – just 30% from the field – but the Champs did connect on 10 threes and came up with an astonishing 24 offensive rebounds, including nine from Henry Stone.
Stone finished with a double-double, scoring 14 points and snagging 12 rebounds in total while swiping four steals. Kaleb Kelso led the way for Cascade in the scoring department with 19 points total, and he also finished with a double-double after grabbing 10 rebounds. Kelso also dished out five assists and came up with a pair of steals. Jason Cullum struggled from the field, but he still managed to reach double-figures with 10 points on the night.
For Chapel Hill, Tristan Goad led the way with a team-high 16 points but on 15 shots, including 14 points in the second half, to go along with his eight rebounds and four assists. He did commit four turnovers, and Cascade was able to turn the 20 Rocket turnovers into 23 points.
To start, Cascade was stifling defensively, giving up just two field goals to take a 13-5 lead after the opening period.
In the second quarter, Cascade outscored Chapel Hill, 12-8, to take a 12-point lead, 25-13, into the halftime locker room. The Rockets shot just 20% from the field in the first half with just four made field goals, none of them being three-pointers.
Coming out of halftime, Cascade began to find their offensive groove, outscoring Chapel Hill, 22-9, in the third quarter to take a commanding 47-22 lead into the final frame. The Champions connected on four three-pointers in the period to spark the run while the Rockets converted as many field goals in the quarter as they did in the entire first half (4).
By the fourth quarter, the result was all but in the bag for Cascade, and they emptied the bench with about three minutes to go. Chapel Hill outscored the hosts, 12-10, cutting the lead to 23 points, 57-34, when the final buzzer went off.
Chapel Hill falls to 5-11 (0-3).
Cascade wins their 10th game of the season, improving to 10-7 (1-1). Their next game is scheduled for Tuesday night at Community in the first “Battle of Bedford” matchup this season, LIVE on The Zinger 100.9 starting at 5:45 p.m.
