Champs Prevail in Low-Scoring Affair at Fayetteville City

FAYETTEVILLE, TN – The Cascade Champions were able to find a way to win ugly on the road, 40-35, over the hometown Fayetteville City Tigers on Friday night.

Cascade saw four different players finish with a team-high seven points: Jason Cullum, Henry Stone, Kaleb Kelso, and Cooper McElroy. Tyler Barrett connected on a pair of three-pointers to finish with six points as well. 

For Fayetteville City, Samuel Willoughby finished with a game-high 15 points, and Eli Groce chipped in with 14 points of his own. Willoughby finished just 3/10 at the free throw line, and Cascade was able to hold him to just five points in the second half.

In the opening period, Fayetteville held onto a slim lead, 9-8, after a mistake-filled first quarter saw Cascade leave at least 10 points on the court with self-inflicted fastbreak turnovers. 

Cascade outscored the Tigers, 9-7, in the second quarter, taking an 18-17 lead into the halftime locker room after junior guard, Tyler Rodgers, connected on a layup at the buzzer. 

In the second half, Cullum and McElroy combined for 14 points, each scoring all seven of their points in the final 16 minutes. Cascade held the Tigers to just four points in the third quarter, outscoring Fayetteville City, 14-4, to take a commanding 32-21 lead heading into the final frame. 

To start the fourth quarter, neither team scored for the first three-and-a-half minutes. Fayetteville managed to cut it to four points in the final 90 seconds, but Willoughby went 0/2 at the line with a chance to make it a two-point game and allowed Cascade to escape in the end. McElroy and Cullum each connected on a pair of free throws at the end of the quarter to hang on, 40-35, giving Cascade their second consecutive win of the season.

Fayetteville City falls to 1-4 on the season and will host Franklin County on Monday night. 

Cascade improves to 5-3 on the season, and will return home to play Eagleville on Tuesday night, LIVE on The Zinger 100.9 and AM 1400 starting at 5:45 p.m.
