Unionville, Tenn. – Community’s Landon Lovvorn scored his 1,000th point of his career on Tuesday night inside of The Rogers Kent Brothers Gymnasium, but the Cascade Champions (11-7, 2-1) pulled out the important District 9-AA and rivalry win, 72-55, on Tuesday night.
Jason Cullum and Kaleb Kelso each scored 20 points for Cascade while Tyler Rodgers scored a season-high 12 points on the night.
For Community (10-10-0-3), Charlie Haskins led the way with a team-high 16 points – 14 of them coming in the second half – with Austin Stickler and Lovvorn also reaching double-figures with 13 points and 10 points, respectively.
Cascade took the lead early on and never trailed the entire night despite the Vikings keeping the game close for the first half. The visitors led, 19-16, at the end of a fast-paced opening period.
In the second quarter, the Champions outscored Community, 15-13, to head into the halftime locker room with a five-point lead, 34-29. Kelso started out on fire, finishing the first half with 14 points, but the Vikings seemed to be hanging around in a similar fashion to the first game of the night.
However, in the second half, Cascade took over, outscoring the Vikings, 22-10, in the third quarter to take a 56-39 lead into the final frame. Jason Cullum began to take over for Cascade in his first game back in Unionville since transferring to Cascade after his sophomore year. After being held out last season due to some disagreements between the two schools, Cullum made his name known in the second half, scoring 16 points to close out the Vikings.
Community cut it to as close as 11 points late in the third quarter, but a Cullum step-back three-pointer seemed to finally take all of the air out of Vikings rally. In the fourth quarter, Cascade’s lead would balloon to as much as a 22-point lead before Chris Lawson emptied his bench to run out the final minutes on the clock. Community made one final push, but could only cut it to 17 points, 72-55.
This loss marked the third consecutive district game that the Vikings have lost by 15 points or more this season, and the third consecutive loss to the Champions dating back to last season.
Community falls to 10-10 (0-3).
Cascade improves to 11-7 (2-1) and are scheduled to travel to Cannon County on Friday night, LIVE on The Zinger 100.9 starting at 5:45 p.m.
