COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – The Shelbyville Central Golden Eagles (21-8, 4-3) were held to just three hits, committed two errors, and fell at District 6-AAAA leaders Cookeville (19-5, 6-1), 6-0, on Monday.
The Cavaliers scored four runs in the bottom of the second before tacking on two more in the bottom of the third to take an insurmountable 6-0 lead.
Landen Severance was dominant on the mound for the hosts, pitching a complete-game shutout while giving up just three hits and two walks with seven strikeouts on only 83 pitches.
Meanwhile, Brody Thomas got the start for the Golden Eagles, getting through 4.1 innings of work while giving up six runs – four earned – on seven hits and two walks with five strikeouts on 92 pitches. Ashton Whorley came on in relief for the final 1.2 innings, giving up just two hits and one walk with two strikeouts on 31 pitches.
At the plate for Shelbyville Central, Stephen Bobo led off going 1-for-3, Elijah Westbrooks went 1-for-3, and Whorley finished 1-for-1 for the third and final hit.
Cookeville came through with nine base hits, including a triple from Ty Harrison. Cole Teeters led off for the Cavs and went 2-for-4 with an RBI, KJ Anderson was 2-for-4 with an RBI, and Jackson Jones finished 2-for-3 with a run scored. Zolten Knight was 1-for-3 with an RBI, Easton Davidson went 1-for-3, and Tyler Smith went 0-for-2 with an RBI.
The Golden Eagles look to salvage a series split on Tuesday at home with first-pitch set for 6:00 p.m.
