SHELYVILLE, TN – The Shelbyville Central Golden Eagles opened the 2024/25 home slate with an impressive 43-point win, 82-39, against the Class 3-A Glencliff Colts on Saturday afternoon.
Powered by a 38-point third quarter, the second year of the Shane Young era has started with a pair of wins in as many tries.
Jordan Taylor scored 11 of his team-high 17 points in the third quarter and was one of three Golden Eagles to reach double-digit scoring. Three others, Tommie Cannon, Malek Johnson, and Idris Grey, scored nine points apiece. Javon Lee and Tae’Shawn Shelton were the other two in double-figures with 15 points and 12 points respectively.
For Glencliff, Lazaros Odwar led the way with a game-high 18 points with 11 of them coming in the third quarter. Curtis Wonderly was the only other Colt to reach double-figures with 10 points.
Shelbyville’s defense led the way from the opening tip, holding Glencliff to just six points in the opening eight minutes to jump out to a 22-6 lead. Shelton outscored the Colts by himself, connecting on four field goals for eight first-quarter points. Javon Lee chipped in with six points in the quarter as five different Golden Eagles got on the scoresheet early.
Lee led the way in the second quarter with six more points as Shelbyville outscored Glencliff 17-12 in the period to take a 39-18 lead into the halftime locker room. Odwar, after being held scoreless in the first quarter, scored seven of his team’s 12 points in the second quarter.
However, in the third quarter, Shelbyville began to assert themselves, led by Taylor’s 11 third quarter points. Gray and Cannon each scored seven points in the quarter as well, leading to a 38-17 quarter to give Shelbyville a commanding 77-35 lead going into the fourth quarter.
The Golden Eagles outscored the Colts, 5-4, in the final frame just for good measure to put the finishing touches on an 82-39 home-opening victory.
