SHELBYVILLE, Tenn. – The Shelbyville Central Golden Eagles (8-3-1, 6-0-1) took down Coffee County (4-1-3, 4-1-1), 2-0, in the second and final District 9-AAA regular season meeting of the year on Thursday.
In the previous meeting on March 13th, Coffee County held Shelbyville to a 1-1 draw in Manchester, but this time the Golden Eagles managed to generate a pair of goals to take home all three points and move into first place in the regular season district standings.
After a strong start early on that generated a few half-chances, the Golden Eagles eventually broke through as halftime approached when Carlos Velasquez found the back of the net after Shelbyville’s high press won the ball high up the pitch.
Coffee County had a few chances in the first half, primarily from set pieces, but the Golden Eagles held strong defensively, closing out the first half with a 1-0 lead.
In the second half, Shelbyville began to settle down and play a more possession-oriented game, and the Golden Eagles found the second breakthrough with a perfectly weighted through-ball from Velasquez to Emmanuel Leyva that gave Leyva a one-on-one opportunity with the Raiders’ goalkeeper. Leyva dribbled around the keeper and calmly slotted home Shelbyville’s second and final goal of the night.
Shelbyville generated a few more promising chances, but ultimately were unable to find a third goal. However, thanks to a strong defensive performance, the Golden Eagles finished with a clean sheet for the fourth time in seven district games.
The Golden Eagles travel to Spring Hill on Tuesday with kick-off scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
